Tips for a beginner?

Hi everyone! I love the mood boards that are here. I feel really inspired but also a bit intimidated. I don’t consider myself as visually creative. What recommendations do folks have for beginners?

I’m currently outlining characters for a novel I’m working on right now. And I’d love to use mood boards. But what exactly do I do? What do I use?

Any advice is most welcome and deeply appreciated!

Hey everyone. Coming to you all with two books from Black female authors whose books would fit the interests of this sub.

Currently reading and loving: Lonely Crowds by Stephanie Wambugu about two young Black women who find themselves the only Black students in their New England Catholic school. Their friendship is immediately intense and toxic as they come of age in the NYC art world of the 90s. Ruth has worshipped Maria since their girlhood days and has been more than happy to play second fiddle to Maria and her volatile ways. Their lives take different paths with Maria being a successful artist and Ruth living out a quieter life. Their magnetism to one another forces them to finally face their decades long journey and struggles within in art world. And with one another. Currently, reading and loving it so far!

Just finished and loved: Honey by Imani Thompson just came out. I’m reminded of My Sister The Serial Killer and The Eyes Are The Best Part. Two femgore books by WOC that were just brilliant. Our bored, unsatisfied protagonist, Yrsa is in her doctorate program. Her hookups with women and men do nothing much for her. She’s annoyed with her students and is finding it hard to push her doctoral work forward. In most measures, she’s incredibly successful. Attractive, intelligent, in an elite institution, but if she’s being honest with herself, she still feels a deep emptiness. Until she stands by as a sexual abuser die. Suddenly, Yrsa is electrified and obsessed with making bad men pay. I read this as and found it so dryly hilarious. Yrsa is so compelling and she’s not instantly likable(which I loved). Highly recommend!

Hi everyone! I’m avoiding writing by being in Reddit lol. I told myself it’ll count as part of the process if I at least chat with other writers.

So let’s hear it! What are you currently working on? Could be weird girl lit or not.

I’m currently in the process of adapting some of my screenplays to books. A short that I have fits the genre. This short in particular is about a young woman navigating grief and possible psychosis after the loss of her beloved grandparents. She’s not sure if she’s being haunted or if she’s going insane.

What about all of you?! What are you writing?
