My toddler is 2.5 and was sleep trained early (able to fall asleep in his bed alone, self soothe if woken in the middle of the night). Fast forward to a bit after his 2nd birthday, he regressed badly and could suddenly couldn't sleep on his own at all. We tried (not very hard, since he could now talk and get out of bed) to get him back on track but exhaustedly gave up. We resorted to co-sleeping, which has accidentally turned into the norm now.
This works fine right now but I'm expecting a new bub in 4 months time. I personally don't mind continuing the cosleeping until whenever he wants to go back to his own bed by himself, but the new bub will be in our room in a bassinet and I plan on nursing at night. I'm just not sure how this will affect the toddler and if he'll be able to get a good night's rest if there's a constantly crying baby in the room too.
I'm wondering if I should try to get him back in his own bed before new bub arrives, or if cosleeping with the toddler in my bed + baby in room could work. Wanted to know others' experiences/thoughts.
More info: toddler does have a big boy bed in his own room which in theory dad could cosleep with him there, but he is very much a mummas boy and wants to be with me at night.
