Minimum predrill diameter for boring bar
I have a small but pretty sturdy hobby lathe and I'm learning to use it. Lately I was trying to cut large diameter bores into some aluminum. I have a S12M SCLCR 09 boring bar. On this website, it says that the minimum predrill diameter is 16mm. I actually drilled a ~12mm hole and somehow I was able to pretty easily make it bigger and then the boring bar somehow wouldn't be able to progress any further and it all got messy. It was really surprising that it worked its way easily for the first 20mm or so and only then it'd start getting stuck.
How's this 16mm actually calculated and does it really require that much? Unfortunately I don't have any drill that big, but I guess I could get a smaller boring bar too?
