Lesser-Known Tropes That Bug You a Little

Hello, film folks. I was watching The Graduate the other day and I realized that it really bugs me when a male character in a film has his face all lathered up and is ready to shave but then gets distracted and instead of finishing shaving he just wipes the shaving cream off. It’s such a specific thing that I feel like I’ve seen in a hundred movies, and it bugs me every time. It got me thinking about lesser-known tropes in movies and I wanted to ask the community about their favorites/least-favorites. That’s fun, right?

Movies That Are Too Long

Hey, movie dorks. I was watching Licorice Pizza for the second time the other day and, though the movie is super charming (age gap stuff aside) I found it difficult to justify the two hour- plus running time. I think one of the many subplots could have been removed and it would have been just fine. For what is essentially a rom com (even a really well-shot PTA rom com), two hours is a lot.

Of course, some movies more than justify their runtime and need to be exactly as long as they are, but I’m not talking about those. Can we think of some movies that would be pretty close to perfect were it not for the length?

Kubrick Set Without 4k Ability

Hey, folks. I am only Blu-ray capable at the moment (both my player and likely my TV cannot do 4k/UHD etc. I currently own the following Kubrick Blu-ray Criterions: Eyes Wide Shut, Barry Lyndon, The Killing, Paths of Glory, Dr. Strangelove. I also have 2001 and the Shining WB releases. Is there any reason I need this Kubrick collection? I mean, I like Full Metal Jacket and Clockwork Orange a lot. Lolita is fine. Are the special features so amazing that I can justify this to myself? I really like buying new things and receiving them in the mail, so that’s definitely a point in favor of getting the Kubrick Box Set but I’m realistically not going to be 4k-ready any time soon. Is that the main draw here or does this make sense for Blu-ray people? Can someone help me make this difficult decision?
