Customized Brave and Firefox - Sharing my personal Experience with Browsers

Hi people, I'm a tech guy who likes to tinker stuff. I have customized everything I use.

I hope that this post is not ragebait for people.

Have been using both Firefox and Brave together for a year now.

Firefox is more customizable and surprisingly somehow better at watching YouTube due to its smoothness. Adblock with uBlock works really well. But it lacks good keyboard shortcuts, PWAs, and reliable dev tools.

Brave gives me more performance in every single website other than YouTube. It is a little bit more responsive, has best-in-class adblock, best privacy features (I use Brave Origin), better extension support, and dev tools as its basically based on Chromium. And last but not the least—the best sync ever. It lacks appearance customizations because of being Chromium. Only con for at least me is the YouTube performance (it's usable but I wished it was more smooth). I've tried multiple things for that (like GPU acceleration and XWayland or even Vulkan stuff) but nothing works well enough. Basically it's a Chromium performance issue; I get the same lag (especially on YT Shorts) on Chrome, Vivaldi, Thorium, Helium, and Opera as well.

Now I will score browsers on my personal preference - Keep them with a grain of salt as its completely subjective and also comparing Gecko and Blink is kinda stupid, but ultimately what matters is user experience.

For my 1 Year+ Usage

  • Firefox: 8.5/10
  • Brave: 9/10

Other Browsers I have tried:

  • Thorium: 8 Months Was 9/10 in past, 7/10 now due to update & performance issues.
  • Helium: 2 Weeks Minimal (too much for me), solid browser, good performance (little less than Brave Origin) 8.5/10.
  • Zen: 1 Week Awesome, but got the Firefox catches 8.5/10.
  • Floorp 6 Months: Had a good experience, not as polished I would say as compared to Firefox, but still great 8/10.
  • Chrome: 3 Years (Shamed to say that 😭 Was on windows though atm) Shitty browser, especially on Linux 2/10.
  • Opera: 2 Months (Tried on Windows) Meh 6/10.
  • OperaGX: 5 Months (Windows as well) MehMeh 5/10.

Here is the custom Firefox theme for people who wanna install it (Linux Only Rn - Give it stars, if it gets 20+ I will add Windows and Mac Support). https://github.com/ddroid/firefox-theme
