A Strange Encounter at Albert Heijn Tonight

I’ve lived in Enschede for four years, and I honestly love this country. I respect Dutch culture, stay calm, stay polite, and never try to cause trouble for anyone.

But tonight at Albert Heijn, I ran into the first truly unpleasant person I’ve met here. I was taking milk from the fridge, and a man was standing extremely close behind me — less than a meter. I assumed he needed something from the same shelf, so I grabbed the milk and didn’t close the door so he could take his item easily.

Instead of appreciating the gesture, he called out to me and told me to “show some manners” and close the door. I explained my reasoning and asked why he was standing so close. Then he said something unbelievable: “People like you are my employees.”

At that moment, I realized this wasn’t about the fridge door — it was about his ego. I could have argued, but he had his kids with him, and I had mine. I chose peace over pointless drama. After four years here, this is the first time I’ve seen someone act like that. Whatever “status” he thinks he has, it means nothing to me. I don’t work for people with sick attitudes, and I never will.

Stuck in a KPN/Odido/Ziggo switching nightmare—what are my rights?

I am looking for some advice on how to handle an ongoing dispute between my previous, current, and failed ISP providers. Here is the timeline of my situation:
February: I requested a switch from KPN to Odido to take advantage of better rates.
February – May: I had to wait until May for my KPN contract to end. However, when the time came, Odido failed to connect me, when I asked them the reason, they responded "we could not install the connection until the KPN line was active." Despite back-and-forth communication, the switch failed, and I formally requested that Odido cancel my order.
Meanwhile: I received a message from KPN saying they were "happy I decided to stay," which I never requested.
In mid-May: I signed up with Ziggo to switch over. I received my equipment mid-June and successfully installed it by the last week of June.
The Current Issue: My KPN connection is still active. KPN claims they never received a notification from Ziggo to terminate the contract. When I contacted Ziggo, they claimed they did request the switch, but were told there was an "existing switch request" already in the system—presumably the canceled Odido request that never cleared.
Now, I am paying for both connections. Ziggo refuses to take responsibility for the failed hand-off, and KPN refuses to terminate my service because they didn't receive an official "switch" signal, despite me having active service with a new provider.
I have spent hours on the phone with both companies, and no one is willing to take accountability. Has anyone dealt with this "ghost" switch request issue before? Do I have a legal leg to stand on to avoid paying for this extra month with KPN, or is there a specific department or consumer body. I should escalate this too?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for advice to reduce my home's energy bills (€350/month)

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice from people who have gone through this themselves or work in the industry.

I own a house in Enschede, and we're a family of 5. Our average gas and electricity bill is around €350 per month, and I'd like to reduce our dependence on the grid over the next few years.

Unfortunately, I have a limited budget, so I can't afford to install everything at once. My plan is to invest in one major upgrade each year, but I want to do it in the smartest order.

I'm considering:

Solar panels

Home battery

Heat pump (or hybrid heat pump)

Better insulation

Any other upgrades that give the best return on investment

I'd really appreciate your advice on questions like:

If you were starting from scratch with a limited budget, what would you install first, second, third, etc.?

Are there any brands you'd recommend (or avoid) for:

Solar panels

Inverters

Home batteries

Heat pumps

What system sizes would you recommend for a family of five?

Is it worth buying a battery now, or should I wait a few years?

Are there Dutch subsidies or financing options that I should consider?

Are there any common mistakes that first-time buyers make?

My long-term goal isn't necessarily to be 100% off-grid, but to become as energy independent as reasonably possible while making financially sensible decisions.

I'd really appreciate any advice, personal experiences, or recommendations. Thanks in advance!
