(Note update: I’ll explain this scene. Mitsuki is reconnecting with music and she has been healing so far she’s taken initiative with her actions and has communicated change. She’s taken the step to get Aya back like in her dream it’s through facing her fears and regaining her identity and getting her music back. She is afraid Aya won’t love her if she isn’t herself anymore and isn’t tied to music. She’s been very vocal throughout the manga about her sense of self. The only person who’s preventing her from being her is her. Aya loves her regardless which is truthful. She’s reconnecting with music and clearly has shown signs of becoming a solo artist as it should be and Aya was swept up in emotion from
Mitsukis mini performance. The clear display of communication of getting your lover back who lost her way is very important. These two yearners yearned for each other and Mitsuki own gaze seeing she won’t loose Aya and just seeing her girlfriend made her pause. Her thoughts overwhelmed her (could have been from the song maybe?) and she slipped out the fact she wanted to marry her. She is so in love that she slipped out a full ass proposal. Everyone including us readers were left shocked. Mitsuki 100% meant what she said because it came from her heart. Aya I don’t think will completely 100% just accept or reject that kind of offer but I do think anyone is gonna get married just yet. This whole chapter really was just about healing and the fun detail of thinking and wanting to be with someone you love who this whole time likewise you thought you lost. Very sweet but if anything she is communicating through actions and music and is healing. Very good chapter.)

I missed Kannas birthday but I won’t forget Joes this time!! He was born August 29th 1979. Congrats on turning 47 this year our favorite Uncle Joe!!

The new volume and anime are dropping in the same month. JANUARY IS GONNA BE HELLA GREEN FOR SURE 💚

This is very problematic and while it’s more sensitive it’s been a stirring topic in the fandom and it’s been nagging at me for a while. I think addressing it is important especially to clear up misinformation. I do think this topic will come up again in the future so I’m making this to get things out of the way.

Before I start I’d like to add that everyone’s perspective on this will differ. People have different experiences and interpret consent differently, both with and without considering the law. The allegation as it stands is Mitsuki sexually assaulting and/or abusing Aya, or, as far as some people have gone, raping her. I also want to note that this is a breakdown and isn’t meant to excuse harmful behavior.

Let’s get a few things out of the way shall we?

Does Mitsuki only use sex to cope?
No. From my understanding, we’ve seen her be deeply physically attached to Aya. She is very physically intimate, from her hand placement to hugs and affection. She uses physical intimacy as a means of comfort. Mitsuki when she was sick asks Aya, “Aya-san, you really love me, don’t you?” A lot of people overlook Mitsuki’s current mental state. She is very mentally fragile. Lines like this are a means of confirmation and reassurance. She stated, “My body is far more honest than my mind.” This also reinforces the idea that she is more honest physically than verbally. She uses physical intimacy in all of its forms as a means to express herself, but also to seek comfort. She uses it as an avoidance outlet as well.

Did Mitsuki want to have sex with Aya when she thought they got into a fight?
Also a huge no. Mitsuki is actively in a fragile mindset. She thought she understood Aya very well, but when Aya lied to her as a means of protecting her and not harming or upsetting her, Mitsuki panicked. This is someone who is actively avoidant because she has fears. Because she lost her sense of music and, in turn, a part of herself, she is afraid of losing Aya. The panic she felt from what she believed was an uproar made her think she was fighting with, or had upset, Aya when that wasn’t actually the case. She leaned in to kiss her to try to deescalate the situation. She wasn’t attempting to sleep with her. Her goal was to try to calm Aya down. She uses affection as a means of comfort, like I said, so when Aya pushed that source of comfort and intimacy away Mitsuki came to the conclusion that Aya didn’t want her affection anymore.

Aya’s alcoholism and codependency
I wouldn’t call Aya an alcoholic, but she is reliant on alcohol. She often goes out drinking with friends from university, but we also see her doing it more and more after the miscommunication with Mitsuki happens. She turns to alcohol to comfort herself.
Aya is someone who feels a need to be relied upon by Mitsuki. She wants to support her and help her. The codependency comes from Aya putting Mitsuki first again and again, and often ending up neglecting herself. She avoided Mitsuki and gave her space so that Mitsuki could eventually open up, as a means of putting her first, but she ended up pushing Mitsuki’s avoidance further. When she is unable to connect with Mitsuki or help her, she turns inward. She thinks Mitsuki doesn’t love her anymore. Why can’t she be helpful? Why can’t she support her? Etc. etc. Her use of alcohol is a way to cope with what’s happening.
Earlier in the timeskip, Aya was drunk and was very clingy and physically intimate with Mitsuki. A chapter later, they woke up in the same bed after that night. Mitsuki is used to drunk Aya and physical intimacy between them is common. There is a chance they have been intimate when one of them was drunk before. Although this doesn’t mean it’s right. For their relationship, and for many people in real life, this kind of dynamic can become normalized even when it is unhealthy or wrong for many.

Mitsuki and Aya’s scene explained
Aya and Mitsuki fought, and as always, Mitsuki chose avoidance. Aya, while at her bar, drinks away to cope with what’s happening. Taking things inwardly, she would assume she can’t help Mitsuki, and because Mitsuki won’t look at her the same, she questions whether Mitsuki even loves her. Aya gets so drunk that she leans on Shu. Mitsuki, already being in such a fragile mindset after their fight, sees this and starts to overthink. She thinks Aya doesn’t want her affection anymore. She begins thinking Aya might like Shu and no longer love her. Mitsuki is consumed by these thoughts. When carrying Aya home, she is consumed by the idea that she has lost her “music”…Aya. Aya wakes up in their bed, still drunk but conscious enough to pull Mitsuki in. Aya wants Mitsuki’s affection and pulls her closer. Mitsuki actively hesitates and pulls away.She asks, “I thought you didn’t want this?”She thought Aya didn’t want her affection whether that meant kisses or sex.She soon returns the affection fully as they make out. They hold each other tightly as Mitsuki tears the music poster.The next day or evening Aya couldn’t remember what happened, but mentioned that nothing must have happened, and Mitsuki didn’t bring it up.

Talking about the moral ambiguity
This whole scene is deeply emotional, and I’d argue morally ambiguous. Aya was drunk enough to pull Mitsuki in and communicate, but she also had a blurry memory afterward. The line of consent is thin. For many people a drunk person cannot meaningfully consent. For others, the question depends on how impaired the person was and whether they were still capable of making and communicating a decision. It’s clear that drunken affection between the two is a plausible norm within their relationship. Mitsuki actively pulled away but eventually returned the affection. The decision to kiss someone who is drunk is questionable and for many people it is wrong. I won’t argue against that. However,the scene does not depict someone deliberately trying to take advantage of the other. It depicts two people with fears of losing the person they love, pouring out their affection to each other. One seeks affection because she thinks she has lost the other, while the other questions the other’s affection because she thinks she has lost her. That doesn’t automatically make the situation healthy or consensual. The scene isn’t malicious. It’s vulnerable. The moral ambiguity is supposed to showcase how unhealthy they’ve become. It’s about the complexity of love with the flaws of dependency, intoxication, poor communication etc. We are suppose to see how deep and gut wrenching their love actually can be.

Did they have sex?
Yes and no. The scene is left very ambiguous. They clearly shared deep physical affection, but Aya’s own words state that nothing must have happened. As alarming as it is I don’t think the scene is supposed to be focused specifically on sex but intimacy in general. It’s a vulnerable scene and personally I don’t think they had sex. However many have interpreted it a sea. This is ultimately up to interpretation. As wrong as is it for Mitsuki to not bring up what happened. It makes sense. Mitsuki is still scared and actively thinks she lost or is losing Aya. Her heavy avoidance is a means of a “solution” to her. Bringing up anything. Risks everything.

The allegations
The idea of rape largely comes from Aya’s lack of/fuzzy memory, her saying that nothing must have happened, Mitsuki kissing her while she was drunk, and the fact that Mitsuki never brings it up afterward. I think a large portion of this also comes from the chapter’s poor framing, but also from people’s mischaracterization of both characters and their current anger and dislike toward Mitsuki. The sexual assault/abuse interpretation primarily comes from Mitsuki kissing Aya while she was drunk and people’s individual views on consent. I don’t think Mitsuki raped Aya. That is a very serious allegation, and I don’t think the text currently supports labeling what happened as rape. I will argue however that Mitsuki kissing Aya while she was drunk is morally questionable. I won’t label the scene as definitively consensual or definitively abuse. I think what Mitsuki did was questionable and that the scene intentionally leaves us with an uncomfortable line around consent. However if someone interprets the scene as nonconsensual or dubcon the fact is it wasn’t malicious. Mitsuki never acted with malicious intent. Intent does not erase harm but no one was trying to deliberately exploit someone.

What’s the conclusion?
Mitsuki has been heavily villainized and misinterpreted meanwhile Aya has also been heavily victimized by the fandom. Both are active participants in their relationship who have made poor choices. Mitsuki has rightfully caused more issues than Aya but Aya isn’t innocent herself. Their relationship has become increasingly unhealthy, but they clearly love each other deeply. This scene, and everything surrounding it can absolutely be interpreted as involving questionable consent and it make sense people are uncomfortable with it. I just don’t think the narrative main goal was for it to be duncom or rape. The point of this scene was vulnerability and heartache between two people who are losing their “music.”

The moral and romantic/intimate ambiguity is part of it. It’s about two people who don’t want to lose the person they love even as their own fears and unhealthy mechanisms and everything has ended up pushing them further apart. The main focus is about vulnerability and losing a loved one. Not what they are actually did. I don’t think this scene should be reduced to “Mitsuki is an abuser” or “Aya is a helpless victim,” because neither captures the complexity of what the story is trying to show. They are both two flawed people who deeply love each other but are handling their fears and pain in unhealthy ways.

The scene is uncomfortable and morally questionable especially when it comes to consent and people can and should criticize it. Until or if ever the story explicitly confirms what happened. Nothing should be treated as objective fact. You can criticize Mitsuki’s actions without turning her into a monster and you can acknowledge Aya’s pain without removing her agency. They aren’t abuser x victim. Their relationship is messy has become more unhealthy and complicated but that’s the point. Their love is challenged. They have struggles and are stepping into an adult life and what comes with that is flaws and complexities.

The story and writing is flawed. The pacing and four panel limit doesn’t help. But to anyone who’s still questioning things go back and reread. The stories flow ties in better when you reread. Understanding characters becomes easier when you take time. Also ask questions and engage with the fandom more. You might just find answers.

This topic is very sensitive and can be hard to digest, People will always have their own opinion at the end of the day but I just hope this helps clear up some misinterpretations and any misunderstandings. Thank you for listening.
