Is it unusual to have a fridge wider than the standard 36in?

We've got a counter-depth 48in fridge from I believe the late 90s. I usually describe the whole kitchen at "Top of the line, in 1999". I've already had to replace some parts in the compressor to keep it going, and there's some other issues that are having me look around for replacement options.

The issue is that apparently this isn't a normal thing? I see dozens of fridges at 36in for regular prices, and then the second I try and find a 48in one, there isn't one for less than $10,000 except for one commercial option that's just two 24in fridges put together on wheels.

I've ended up on websites for manufacturers in other countries. I've discovered an entire industry of "elite" brands that you don't see advertised anywhere. I've pierced the veil to see a few tax brackets above me, and it's terrifying.

But why is it so different? Is it just a supply/demand issue? I never thought the price difference between 3 feet and 4 feet would be so massive. Has anyone bought a 48in fridge before?
