Quick feedback request: Do these 4 short snippets sound natural? (Takes ~1 min)
Hi everyone! I’m working on a small writing project and want to make sure the phrasing sounds genuinely natural, idiomatic, and human—avoiding anything that feels stiff, overly polished, or translated. Could you take a quick look at these 4 short snippets and let me know your honest gut-reaction?
Passage A (Dialogue):
“Yeah. Missing was hard enough without people laughing.” A moment later: “We don't have to decide anything about football tonight.”
Passage B (Explanation):
“Because there are two things here. You did something wrong, so you ask Allah to forgive you. But your sister is also the person you hurt. Asking Allah for forgiveness doesn't make that part disappear. You still need to face what you did with her—apologize, and try to put right what you can. She may still be upset for a while, but that doesn't make the apology pointless.”
Passage C (Adult-facing prose):
A child's “why?” does not always require a long defense of the rule. Sometimes one clear reason is enough. Keep adding explanations and the conversation can begin to sound like a negotiation, with each new reason becoming another point to argue. Explain what genuinely needs explaining, then let the boundary stand.
Passage D (Narrative):
At the return desk, Sami watched the librarian take the book from his hands. The water mark was only on one page. Maybe she wouldn't see it. “There's something on that page,” he said before she could put the book aside. “It happened while I had it.” She opened to the mark, looked at it, then back at him. “Thank you for telling me.” His father was waiting outside. “I told her about the book,” Sami said. His father looked at him. “You told her.”
“Yeah.”
That was all.
Quick questions to guide your thoughts (any brief feedback helps):
● Does anything sound unnatural, clunky, or awkward?
● For the dialogue parts, would you realistically say something like this aloud?
● Do any sentences feel over-written or trying too hard?
Thank you so much for your time and help!
