Testing your eSIM at home before the trip eliminates most airport arrival failures
After enough arrival failures I've accepted the setup process matters more than which plan I pick.
Worst one: connected through two cities, got a success confirmation after scanning the QR. At the final destination: no data. Spent 20 minutes in arrivals changing APN settings I didn't fully understand. Turned out the eSIM was installed correctly but not set as default data and roaming wasn't enabled. Two settings changes, working in thirty seconds. The prior twenty minutes were completley wasted.
The routine I run now:
Install before departure day, not at the airport. Save QR code and manual activation string as a photo in camera roll, not in email. Two-minute home test: switch default data SIM, enable roaming for that line, open maps and one messaging app, confirm both load, switch back.
This has removed every "eSIM failed" moment from my last four trips. The failure I kept experiencing had nothing to do with plan quality, it was always setup timing and settings.
