Mobile data in Russia

Hello everyone! I’m travelling to Russia from Canada in September, and I’ve heard that it may not be possible for foreigners to buy a SIM card or mobile data plan at Russian stores.

Has anyone used Roamify recently in Russia and can confirm that it actually works? I’d especially appreciate hearing from anyone who has used it in 2026.

Thanks!

How do you handle regional data when crossing between EU and non EU countries in the Caucasus (Turkey / Georgia)?

Hey everyone,

Heading out on a multi-country trip across Eastern Europe, Turkey, and down into Georgia soon, and I’m trying to organize my eSIM setups before landing.

For the EU and Turkey legs, multi-destination regional eSIMs (like Airalo or Holafly) seem straightforward enough for standard roaming data. But once crossing into Georgia, I’ve noticed a lot of regional regional eSIMs either cap data speeds or get pricey compared to local bundles.

While setting up border paperwork, I noticed platforms like Georgian APPA offer localized eSIM data bundles specifically for Georgia alongside mandatory car insurance.

For those who travel through the Caucasus frequently: do you usually stick with one global/regional eSIM for the whole route, or do you install a localized country eSIM as soon as you cross the border for better speeds on local networks like Magti/Silknet? Curious how others manage data switching on multi-stop trips!

Comparing travel options for multi-country trips

I have been looking at a few travel eSIM companies for trips that go through many countries, including Airalo, Saily, Holafly and LotsoTravel.

In addition to cost and data amount I am trying to figure out what really makes a company dependable when moving between countries. Things like network partners, coverage in areas outside cities, hotspot support, activation process and fair-use rules seem to matter more than the main data package advertised.

For people who have used companies what things made the biggest difference in your real experience?

Also curious if anyone has seen a difference, between regional plans and global plans when going through many countries.

MobiMatter Code

Hey everyone, I'm looking for a promo code for MobiMatter. I'm planning to buy one on Friday. Also, I have a question: should I choose an unlimited plan or one of the fixed data packages? I heard that unlimited plans might get throttled or slowed down during the day. What do you think about that?

eSIM for a semester in London

Hey Reddit!

I’m going abroad to London starting September 1st - December 12th (ish), and I’m looking for a good eSIM. I’m planning on doing a lot of short trips to other countries (I have one to Edinburgh already booked, but I’m also hoping to visiting Ireland, Amsterdam, Italy, etc.)

I’d prefer an app where I can get one long plan for the UK, and shorter day plans for my weekend trips to other countries. I’d also prefer an unlimited data plan so I don’t have to worry about my data usage.

Is there an app that’s easy and good for this kind of travel? Simlocal has a 90 day unlimited UK plan with roaming for $120, Holafly’s is $140, Simify has one for the UK and 50 other European countries for $130 - are these reasonable? I truly know nothing about this so any advice/things to watch out for so I don’t get scammed would be very appreciated!

India to Europe - Which ESim would you suggest?

Hi guys!

I am travelling to europe in september for about a month and was looking at ESim options and there are A LOT of them which is slightly confusing.

Currently, I am thinking of getting Ubigi 25GB/30 days plan but not sure if it’s the best one to get.

A little context- I am planning to visit Luxembourg, Mallorca, Munich, Paris and Amsterdam. My usage included Insta stories/post upload, whatsapp for calls, google maps. Can you please recommend which ESim would be the best one to get + how much GB would be sufficient?

Thanks a lot!

Me recordaram muito a https://yesiim.com/

Estou curioso sobre o que as pessoas aqui realmente usam, porque todo site faz parecer simples, mas estou me perguntando como é a experiência real uma vez que você está realmente viajando.

I am using a small provider for esim...

I am using callcooee for my case - atually finding it useful than big providers like airalo etc.... I tried airalo but not that much working when i traveled to Australia and in need of an australian number.

So does anybody agree that small providers are actually giving great and affordable services??

Want to hear what everybody think...

Is a Japan eSIM with a Japanese IP overkill?

Hi,

I'm heading to Japan for the first time this Sep. Main reason is the Asian Games in Tokyo, but I'm tacking on a few days in Kyoto and Osaka too.

Been looking at eSIMs and noticed RedteaGO, Ubigi and Trip all mention stuff about getting a Japanese or local IP address. Honestly not sure if that matters for my situation...

My plan is standard. Google Maps, translation apps, messaging, checking Asian Games ticket info. I don't need a Japanese phone number so a data-only plan covers what I actually need. The thing I cannot figure out is, has anyone here ever got blocked or hit some weird geo-restriction on Japanese ticketing sites or local apps because their eSIM was running on a non-Japanese IP?

I would rather know now than find out the hard way when I am trying to open the ticket page at the venue.

TIA!

Keeping Your Canadian Cellphone Number Active While Working Abroad in India for 1 year

I’m travelling to India for one year to gain foreign work experience. I’d like to keep my current cellphone number active while I’m away, but I’m looking for the lowest-cost plan or the minimum amount I need to pay to keep the number active. What are my options?

Japan eSIM experience: Stellar Security

So I used an eSIM for the first time on my current Japan trip, before that I have used pocket WIFIs only. Specifically, I bought 50 GB of data provided by docomo, IIJ and other networks up to 5g for 30 days of usage. It also included 35 days of free VPN service which helped me access some sites that were blocked in Japan. In total, it was around 11€.

All in all, speeds are pretty good, there were no outages or hidden fees and I could connect to the internet like 15-20 mins after leaving my plane. Comparing that to the pocket WiFi experience, where you have to visit the counter first, always carry it with you, keep it charged, and return it at the end of the trip, this was a much simpler process and i would definitely recommend it, at least if you’re not planning to stream movies or watch YouTube all day, since that would use up more than 50 GB quickly.

How to get an USA phone number while living in Europe?

Hello, everybody!

I currently live in Europe but will be start visiting the US frequently (and ultimately moving here). I was wondering if there’s a way of already setting up an eSIM with my future US number that i can just activate any time I’m here and that I’ll just be able to use for good once I’m here permanently.

I have checked and my phone is compatible with eSims (Iphone 17 pro). My plan is to keep my physical European sim card as my primary number for now while also having the eSim activated to potentially receive texts and calls from the US number (ideally without having to pay extra). Is that possible?

Also, a few follow-up questions:

- Will I have to pay monthly or can I just pay whenever i need to use it?

- What operator is the best?

- How do I go about getting the eSIM? I’ve tried going into my settings but i just get redirected and I’m feeling pretty lost.

Thank you so much! :)))

Edit: thank y’all for all the answers:)
