Leaving Canada for about 1 year – what financial steps should I take before moving abroad?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently in Canada on a **work permit** and planning to move back to India for around **1 year**, with the possibility of returning afterward. I’ve been working here for about 3 years. I **don’t own a car, house, or any major assets in Canada**, so my main concerns are my finances.

I’d appreciate advice on:

Should I keep my Canadian bank accounts and 1–2 credit cards open?

What should I do with my **TFSA/RRSP/investments**?

What should I know about **tax residency and foreign income** while working in India?

Should I keep some emergency savings in Canada?

Should I keep my Canadian phone number for banking, CRA and 2FA?

Anything important I should cancel, update, or document before leaving?

For anyone who left Canada temporarily and returned, **what do you wish you had done before leaving?**

Thanks!

Keeping Your Canadian Cellphone Number Active While Working Abroad in India for 1 year

I’m travelling to India for one year to gain foreign work experience. I’d like to keep my current cellphone number active while I’m away, but I’m looking for the lowest-cost plan or the minimum amount I need to pay to keep the number active. What are my options?

Canadian 2-year diploma → 3rd year bachelor’s in India → WES/Express Entry? Anyone done this

Hi everyone,

I’m moving back to India for around 1 year and wanted some advice about improving my Express Entry profile during that time.

I have a 2-year diploma from Sheridan College, around 3 years of Canadian IT work experience, and a good CELPIP score. I’ll also be working in IT in India, so after completing 1 year of foreign work experience, my estimated CRS should be around 519

I’m also learning French and currently starting around B1 level.

One immigration lawyer suggested that since I came to Canada after Grade 12 and don’t have a bachelor’s degree, I could try transferring my Canadian diploma credits to an Indian university and get direct admission into the 3rd year of BBA/B.Com/BCA or another bachelor’s program

If I can finish the bachelor’s in one year and WES evaluates it successfully, I may qualify for **two or more certificates/diplomas/degrees,** which could increase my CRS to around 525

My friend actually did something similar. He transferred his Canadian 2-year diploma credits to \*\*Karnavati University in Ahmedabad\*\* and completed his BBA there. However, he isn’t planning to return to Canada, so he never did WES or checked whether IRCC would recognize this pathway.

Has anyone here personally done something similar?

Mainly wondering:

\* Did an Indian university accept your Canadian diploma credits into 3rd year?
\* Which university/course did you use?
\* Did WES recognize the final bachelor’s degree?
\* Were you able to claim “two or more credentials” for Express Entry?
\* Any issues with credit transfers or WES that I should know before doing this?

I know nobody can predict CRS scores or draws one year from now. I’m just trying to use my year in India wisely by gaining foreign IT experience, improving French, and possibly completing a bachelor’s at the same time.

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has actually gone through this. Thanks!
