Middle eastern flight disruptions and EU passenger rights (261/2004) – any experiences?
I am one of those who had their travel plans disrupted by the war in the middle east in March 2026. Instead of flying via Abu Dhabi, my partner and I eventually travelled via New Delhi for four times the price.
Fortunately, my point of departure was in the European Union, therefore EU passenger rights apply, and I may be entitled to reimbursement for self-organised alternative transport in case of cancellation, even in the case of extraordinary circumstances beyond the control of the carrier.
Do any of you have any experience with enforcing such a claim? Did you contact Etihad directly, the passenger rights agency of your country, or a court? How long did it take? What did Etihad argue? Were you successful? How much did they pay?
