My indoor cat has become increasingly aggressive and even guards my bedroom. How do I improve this?

I’m really struggling with my 4-year-old indoor male Ragdoll mix. He’s neutered and recently had a vet check, and they didn’t find any medical problems or signs of pain.

His aggression has gradually got worse over the last couple of years and it’s now pretty much a daily issue.

Some examples:

  • He hisses or growls at me almost every day.
  • He’ll follow me around the flat, so he clearly wants to be near me, but then suddenly becomes aggressive, even when I’m completely ignoring him.
  • He’ll happily let me stroke him and even purr, then with almost no warning hiss and swipe at me.
  • If I pick him up or cuddle him, he’ll often hiss, growl or scratch, so I’ve stopped doing that altogether.
  • Sometimes he’ll attack completely out of the blue, even if I’m not interacting with him. For example, I could be sitting with my back to him, minding my own business, and he’ll suddenly pounce and scratch me.
  • Whenever I walk towards my bedroom, he’ll often run in ahead of me, stand by or behind the door, hiss and swipe as I try to walk in, almost as though he’s guarding the room.

What I’d really like to know is whether anyone has successfully improved behaviour like this. If you’ve had a cat that became increasingly aggressive, what actually helped over weeks or months? Were there specific routines, training methods, environmental changes, or ways of interacting that genuinely made a difference? Or is this the sort of behaviour that’s unlikely to improve once it becomes established?

I’d really appreciate any advice because I love him, but living with him has become quite stressful.
