A cis gay man grabbed my butt last night
Context: I am a 35-year-old trans woman.
Trigger : transphobia, sexism, (light) sexual assault
Last night, I was walking downtown with friends. We were on a street lined mostly with "gay" bars (frequented by cis gay men), and we were actually heading to a queer bar nestled among them.
Suddenly, I felt a hand on my butt while walking. It didn't last long; I turned around, annoyed. I should mention I was a bit tipsy. That's when I came face-to-face with a man I know, and he was smiling. He's a cis gay man in his sixties named Marc. I know him because he's a long-time friend of one of my best friends (Anya, a non-binary person).
At the time, I was frozen in shock and my anger subsided. I laughed it off, saying you shouldn't do that, but I didn't get mad at him. I think he seemed a bit drunk too.
I rejoined my friends and didn't see him again that night.
My friends who witnessed the scene made me realize afterward that it was an assault, and that he surely wouldn't have behaved that way with a cis woman.
The next day, sober, I feel terrible. I feel guilty for not reacting, and I feel humiliated. I feel like he viewed me as a cis gay man as well (even though doing that isn't okay between men either, of course). So I experience it as a double assault—sexist, but also one that invalidates my gender identity.
I want to talk to my friend Anya about it, but I'm afraid of hurting them and breaking their friendship with Marc. Right now Anya is on vacation, and I don't really know what to do.
What do you think? What would you advise me to do? I'm thinking about discussing about it with Anya when she is back.
I don't have Marc's phone number or any other way to contact him, so I can't send him a message.
Thanks for reading anyway, in any case. 🙏
