GLP-1s and alcohol: what to know if you’re drinking this weekend
With Fourth of July this weekend, I thought it’d be helpful to share a few things to know about drinking alcohol while on a GLP-1.
GLP-1s aren’t known to have a dangerous direct interaction with alcohol, but that doesn’t mean alcohol feels the same for everyone while taking them.
Some few things to keep in mind:
- Alcohol may hit differently. Some people say they feel buzzed faster, while others say they don’t feel as interested in drinking or don’t feel the effects the same way.
- It may make side effects worse. Alcohol can irritate your stomach and may make nausea, reflux, indigestion, or stomach discomfort more noticeable.
- You may want to be extra mindful around dose day. If you tend to feel side effects most strongly right after your dose (or on a specific day after dosing) that may not be the best time to drink.
- Try not to drink on an empty stomach. Eating beforehand may help reduce stomach irritation and can be especially important for people watching blood sugar.
- Hydrate. Drinking water between alcoholic drinks can help, especially if you’re outside in the heat.
- Be mindful of sugary drinks. Cocktails, frozen drinks, and mixers can add a lot of sugar and calories quickly.
If you do drink, taking it slow and checking in with how you feel is the move.
Has anyone noticed alcohol feels different since starting a GLP-1?
