NDECC Loupes Recommendations – Brand, Magnification, Price & Exam Tips?

Hi everyone,

For the NDECC clinical skills exam I’m currently looking into buying loupes specifically for the exam/practice.

For anyone who has taken the NDECC or is currently preparing for it:

What loupes/brand did you use?

What magnification would you recommend? 2.5x, 3.0x, 3.5x, 4.0x?

Do you prefer traditional TTL loupes or ergonomic/deflection loupes for NDECC?

Approximately how much did you pay for yours?

Are there any cheaper loupes that you think are good enough for NDECC?

Are there any specific NDECC rules/requirements I should be aware of before buying loupes?

Would you recommend getting a headlight as well?

Any brands/models you would avoid?

Any other tips regarding loupes, working distance, posture, or getting used to them before the exam?

I don’t mind investing in a good pair, but I’m trying to find the best value for money rather than spending $2,000–$3,000+ if it isn’t necessary.
Would really appreciate hearing from people who have actually practiced for or taken the NDECC or have heard anything regarding this. Please mention the model, magnification and approximate price if you remember.
Thanks!

Turkish citizen planning to come to Canada for NDEB/AFK in Feb 2028 — what visa should he apply for?

Hi everyone,

Posting on behalf of a friend who is a Turkish citizen/passport holder and a foreign-trained dentist.

He’s planning to start the Canadian NDEB equivalency process and is hoping to come to Canada around **February 2028 to take the AFK exam**. We’re a little confused about what the best approach would be for his visa situation.

For anyone who has gone through the NDEB process from Turkey or another country:

What type of Canadian visa did you apply for to come and take the AFK/NDEB exams?
Did you apply for a regular visitor visa (TRV), or is there another route specifically for people coming for professional/licensing exams?
How early would you recommend applying if the goal is to be in Canada by February 2028?
What documents did you provide to show the purpose of the trip (NDEB registration, exam booking, etc.)?
Did you have any issues convincing the visa officer that you were coming specifically for the exam?
If the long-term goal is eventually to practice dentistry in Canada after completing the equivalency process, does that affect how he should approach the initial visa application?

Would appreciate hearing from **any foreign dentists who have gone through the NDEB/AFK process** and can share their timeline and experience.
Thanks!
