Even Levis 501s are vanity sized now?

I always thought Levis 501 classic jeans were sized by actual waist measurement and inseam length. But lo and behold, my 501's from 2000 are waaaay smaller than the modern same size 26. The new ones have a waist of nearly 29"?!

They're the same style and cut as far as I can tell. I know this has probably been true for a long while, but I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone, being gaslit about how big an inch actually is.
