Why does every gate along a walking path have a different mechanism?

We’ve travelled to the UK several times now and one of our favorite things to do is take the walking paths through the countryside.

The first thing I noticed is every single gate has a different locking mechanism. We must have gone through 15 gates on a walk once and every single gate was different than the last.

Anyway, just something I was always curious about and wondered if there was any reason for it 🤷‍♂️

Headed off to Tan Hill Inn in North Yorkshire to do some walking and get a Giant Yorkshire for dinner, cheers!
