People who tinker with the noise their car makes... Why?

This isn't a bashing post; yes, I do have negative thoughts behind it.

But I am coming through genuine curious and trying to keep my opinion out of it.

What is it that you find cool about having a really loud exhaust that makes that popping noise?

What do you think other people think about it?

Do you acknowledge it's a nuisance but don't care? or do you think it isn't a nuisance?

Why does your car make a louder sound mean it is better? What's the theory behind it?

Is there ever a point where you get embarrassed about it? Like pulling up to an interview?

Thank you in advance for educating me.

What strange old burdens are on your property?

Just bought an old house and have had to sign to say that I won’t use the house to make tallow candles, prepare chemicals, or build steam engines. I’m not allowed to have a dung pile either.

What strange old burdens are you signed up to?

How to help my unemployed adult brother?

My younger brother is almost 26 years old and he hasn’t had a stable job. He worked for a few days in a warehouse about 4 years ago and he’s been unemployed for most of his life. He lives at home, sleeps during the day and plays video games at night. Always on his phone. He left school during the pandemic. He doesn’t go out a lot either nor does he hang out with his friends. He basically doesn’t do anything. He goes to the kitchen to eat and then goes back to his room. He lives like a teenager. I have tried to help him as much as I can. I try to find jobs for him and I send him links to apply for those jobs. I have also suggested learning new skills, get a driving license; just do something with his life instead of staying at home all day doing nothing. He is depressed and I’ve even tried to get him help but nothing seems to work. He is on UC and he contributes £100 monthly for the bills at home. My mum is worried about him and she often cries about his future. I don’t know how to help him.

EDIT: I realise I forgot to mention some significant points. I am not pressuring him to find a job, he had asked me to look for jobs for him and that’s when I started sending out links for him to apply. He said he feels like he would feel better when he starts to work. And yes I did try to get help, I encouraged him to speak to the GP and seek therapy. He tried phone therapy for a while but then gave up because he felt like it was interfering with his sleeping pattern (as he sleeps during the day). I have even encouraged him to join the gym, be paying for a membership myself. I have asked him to go on walks, go out and get some fresh air. I offered to come over whenever he wants me to.

I struggle with my own mental health issues as I have chronic depression and severe anxiety, I’m on medication for it.

Trust me I have done everything that I can to help him but I just feel like it’s not enough.

Do you use British Z (zed) or American Z (zee) when saying 'genz'?

Having a conversation with my 19yr old daughter about the generations, I'm actually genx apparently, she says that genz should be pronounced gen zee but I say it's gen zed as we are british and we say zed not zee.

What's your opinion on this?

What clothes represent british culture?

It's Culture Week at my son's school this week and they're learning about cultures and customs of the world then on Friday they can come in dressed in something which represents British culture.

My son (8) is adamant he wants to wear a basketball kit which i personally would associate with America. I suggested a crown to represent the royal family. My daughter (13) suggested a Stella can, trackies tucked into his socks and a fake chain 🤣

I did a search and got results for a tshirt which says 'Stop the boats' which is incredibly depressing and certainly does not make me proud to be british.

My son's school is very multicultural which i adore, there must easily be 10 different languages spoken in his year alone.

What clothes would you associate with british culture? (Unfortunately this wont sway his decision but its just something which interested me)

Why do tourists all want to 'avoid the touristy areas?'

I live in a city with a LOT of tourism (Edinburgh). Every day there are posts of the city Reddit page (and Facebook and Insta) all saying 'I'm coming to visit your city for the first time but I want to avoid the touristy areas, what are some hidden gems?' These are literally tourists who don't seem to think they are tourists. Don't they realise that if the locals told every tourist about the 'hidden gems' - then they'd just be yet another place full of tourists?

Do you peel your mushrooms?

I'm in my mid 30s and I've only just found out some people peel mushrooms, and I wonder if this is a thing like how Americans wash eggs and Europeans wash chicken. I've probably eaten 100kg of mushrooms in my lifetime and not once has it occured that they have a skin to be peeled

My local chippy says fish and chips has cost about the same as an hours wage for an unskilled worker, and has done for about 100 years. Is there any truth to this?

As the title says....has a portion of fish and chips cost the same as an hours wage for an unskilled worker over the last century?

Maybe I'm missing something, but why are insect screens basically nonexistent in the UK?

Maybe I'm missing something, but why are insect screens basically nonexistent in the UK?

Every summer I end up with the same situation: nice weather, windows open, fresh air for an hour... then a couple of flies decide they're paying rent too.

In plenty of countries, window screens are just standard. You get the airflow without turning your home into a bug meeting point. Yet after years in Britain, I can count on one hand the number of screens I've seen on residential windows.

Was there some historical reason they never caught on here, or do people just accept the occasional airborne houseguest?

What’s the consensus on having a party in a shared garden?

My partner and I recently moved into a ground floor flat with a shared garden. There’s probably 30 or 40 flats in an L shape around the garden.

We just got engaged and wanted to have a lowkey gathering with our friends and family. It would be probably 30 people.

Is it considered acceptable to do this in the shared garden? Our flat can’t fit more than about six people comfortably!

It would be afternoon into evening, no loud music or anything long into the night, just food and drinks and a couple of tables and some garden chairs/picnic blankets outside. We’d even be happy if neighbours wanted to join for a drink.

What’s the social agreement on this?

What does it mean to say “doesn’t touch the sides”?

Hello

I was in the toilet at work (office) washing my hands and a lady came out of the cubicle, she was breathing in really deep through her nose so I looked at her to see if she was ok

She then wiped her nose with the back of her arm and said to be “doesn’t touch the sides anymore love”

What does this mean?

What sides are being touched here?

Is there a reason crumpets aren't served in breakfast cafes or... Anywhere?

I bloody love crumpets, I think they're one of the greatest things in British cuisine and I think they would fit right in the menu of breakfast sets, sandwiches and muffins but I've been all over the place from Kent to Scotland and haven't seen a single cafe that would serve them, what is going on?
