People on 6 figure salaries, do you feel well off?
Someone I know who is on 100k claims they are not feeling rich and it very hard to live of this. They live outside of London.
I find this hard to believe but I am not earning close to that so cannot be certain.
How comfortable is life for those of you who are earning 6 figures?
What song immediately takes you back to the 2000s?
I just heard The Fear by Lil Allen on an advert and it transported me back to the 2000s.
Which songs do you think capture 2000s UK?
I have 2 young foxes living in my shed. What is the best thing that I could feed them? They are so hungry bless them
I know feeding them will encourage them to stay here. But they are so little and so thin, I want to provide food for them.
Anyone been on a TV show what really happens behind the scenes etc?
I'm talking about shows like come dine with me, four in a bed, quiz shows like the chase, catchphrase etc, reality shows big brother, married at first sight.. anything really. What was it like? What is something no one would know about? This is something I've always wondered about lol
When was the last time you hid your disappointment and why?
I was recently told by my sister that my nephew wouldn’t be inviting me to his wedding ceremony as the venue is tiny and they’ve ran out of guests they can invite.
I have been invited to the reception though. Ngl it felt like a bit of a kick in the teeth but I tried to act like I was totally fine with it
What's your song/piece of music, that hasn't been the same since it was interrupted by something?
I didn't know how to word the title, so let me explain.
When I was a teen, I downloaded 'Against All Odds', the Mariah and Westlife variation, from virus-sharing site Limewire (rip).
Somewhere in the song, was a random sneeze. Now, all these years later, I can't listen to it without expecting the sneeze.
R. Kelly's 'I believe I can fly' was the feature on an advert for a compilation album. Now I can't listen to it without expecting "Big Hits '98" to cut in after the first "I believe I can fly"
And finally, I watched so much The Box, that whenever I listen to Murder on The Dancefloor by Sophie Ellis Bexter, I shout "the altogether!" Just before she sings "if you think you're getting awaaaay", because that's what the man in the video shouts.
I can't be the only one 🤣
Why don’t people wait for passengers to get off the bus before boarding anymore?
When getting on the bus I always wait to allow those on the bus to get off first. I’ve always been taught this since i was a kid. If you accidentally got on before someone got off the bus driver would even ask you to step back to let passengers off.
Is that not a thing anymore? I’m regularly seeing people having to try to shove past people to get out the doors because everyone has already jumped on and are blocking the exit. It’s happened to me a few times when I’ve actually had to stand in the wheelchair bay to let the passengers pay and sit down before I can get off as they all block the door.
I was going in to Bolton last week and a woman with a pram was trying to get off but everyone jumped on the bus so fast and blocked the entry she couldn’t get to the exit and some didn’t even bother finding seats just stood near the door so the bus driver didn’t see the poor woman trying to get off and drove off.
Why is this happening?? I thought it was common knowledge to wait so people mustn’t be teaching it to their kids anymore. Although I even see older people doing it too
I might be old fashioned but it’s actually really annoying to watch people just jump on the bus as soon as it stops without a care for others 🤣
Is it not a thing anymore?
What do you think is causing the rise of homeschooling in the UK?
I've noticed that homeschooling seems to be becoming a lot more common in the UK over the past few years. I'm interested in hearing what people think is driving this.
If you're a parent who homeschools, what made you choose that route? If you considered it but decided against it, what influenced your decision?
For teachers, has this been something you've noticed as well? And for anyone who was homeschooled, what was your experience like?
Do you think the increase is mainly down to concerns about mainstream schools, bullying, SEND provision, mental health, curriculum changes, flexibility, or something else?
Would you ask someone you saw vomiting in public if they're okay?
Middle of the day today I saw a woman vomiting on the high street. She had a baby in a push chair but was otherwise alone. Everyone ignored her. I walked up and offered her my water bottle and asked if she and her baby were okay (besides the obvious vomiting) and if she wanted to go somewhere cool incase it was heatstroke or something. Baby looked normal, fast asleep. We had a nice chat in the freezer aisle in M&S.
But I don't think I would if it was 10pm outside a pub with an obviously drunk man.
This isn't to virtue signal or anything about trying to help. Are we too aloof about interacting with strangers? Judgemental when it comes to genders in cases like this? Idk this just kind of sit right with me.
Those of you who do not have enough saved in pension or savings, what is your plan?
If you have given up pension or not saving enough in savings, are you a little worried? Do you intend to retire later or start saving more soon?
What scent is this pen supposed to be?
Got my daughter these scented felt tips and at a lossas to what this one is. The others were obvious
Where to start over?
Hi everyone, I’m looking for genuine advice from people who’ve started over somewhere new.
I’m 24F and currently on holiday with my family. We’re not particularly close and having this time away has made me realise just how unhappy I’ve become with the life I’ve built back home.
I live alone in Hampshire with my dog and cat. I rent my flat, so unfortunately I’m tied into my tenancy for around another year. I’ve also been in a relationship for the past year and over the last few days I’ve realised I’m just not happy anymore.
When I get home, I know something has to change. I’m either going to end the relationship completely, or move away and see what’s in the stars for me. I honestly haven’t decided which yet but I do know I can’t carry on living the way I am now.
I feel like I’ve outgrown where I live. I don’t really have much keeping me here and I can’t shake the feeling that I need a completely fresh start somewhere new.
The positive is that I work from home and earn a decent wage, so as long as I have reliable WIFI I can work from anywhere in the UK. I’m fortunate enough that I could afford to rent somewhere else while continuing to pay for my current flat until my tenancy ends.
I’m looking for recommendations for towns/cities that are a decent size, ideally a good distance from Hampshire, close to the beach, safe and just somewhere that has a really good quality of life.
Somewhere that feels like the kind of place you could genuinely rebuild your life and make a fresh start.
I’d love to hear from anyone who’s done something similar. Where did you move, what made you choose it and do you think it was worth it? And any location recommendations please! 😊
EDIT (for a little more context): I don’t drive unfortunately, can’t/won’t leave my pets & wouldn’t move back home with my family as we’re not very close — also thank you so much for all your suggestions & kind words!💕
The whole front of my house is filled with ants, what do I do?
I have never seen so many ants. Unfortunately I can't post the video which shows exactly what's going on, because it's mad, there are SO MANY ANTS all along the front facade of my house.
I live in a prefabricated 1940's house, and I think the ants have made the whole frontage of my house their nest, judging from the amount I have seen along the front recently. They are also burrowing into the house.
I really, really hate killing anything living but I have resorted to using the spray in the photo on the exterior and any interior points where they are munching through. However this isn't going to stop what's happening internally.
They are in my walls...
We don't really have the money to get pest control out, but we will do it if needs be. I'm just wondering if anybody has any ideas on how to prevent this from getting worse, or exterminating the existing nests.
I'm ready for the ant jokes and getting absolutely rinsed I just hope there's at least one person that can help me 😂😅
How high do people put their hose reel on the wall?
Father-in-law decided to place the hose reel probably about 2 meters high up the wall. What is everyone’s opinion on this?
I have mine on the wall at home around hip height and believe it’s perfect height.
Are celebrities broke now?
I don't know if this is a trend or just some confirmation bias, but it seems like a lot of quite major celebrities are doing ads that seem, frankly, beneath them. A few examples:
- Arnold Schwarzenegger with Lidl's (!) power tools
- Jude Law with both uber eats and Legora (an AI law thing)
-Dua lipa doing Nespresso (I know George Clooney did/does these but he is middle aged man who has a vaguely James Bond vibe, but Dua Lipa is supposed to be pop culture and a bit cool?)
- Chris Hemsworth doing a 'visit Abu Dhabi',
I'm sure I've seen others.
Celebs have always done advertising, but I used to think they had a reputation to protect and had to be a bit selective. (Am I being naive?) But these days it seems like everyone puts their name to anything.
Is there a wider trend that's going on? Are celebrities actually struggling like the rest of us?
Edit to add: I understand that celebrities are not broke in the way that you or I are. My question is about why they don't seem to be very discerning with the ads that the choose to do
Who remembers penguins in Tesco in the 2000s?
Okay so random question!! I was reminiscing on my childhood whilst chatting to my partner and I was talking about how I loved going to Tesco’s as a kid because there were penguins on top of the freezers, but he does not remember it even being a thing. I have tried to search the internet for photos and answers but I am coming across absolutely nothing. So, does anyone remember penguins standing on top of the freezers in the early 2000’s? Or am I actually going crazy?!🤣 Not sure if it was a national Tesco thing or just a specific store thing though. Thank you!!
What's the nicest thing a complete stranger has ever done for you in the UK?
Doesn't have to be anything profound, just one that's stuck with you over the years.
How do you deal with neighbourly disputes involving children?
Over the years I’ve had issues with my neighbour over her kids causing damage to our front and back yard. They’ve damaged the fence between our properties and then did nothing to fix it when it finally gave in. They constantly throw toys, rubbish, balls and all sorts over the fence (I’ve seen them literally throw stuff over, not by accident) and when I ask her to ask them to stop she just says they’re kids and there’s nothing she can do or she starts shouting at me. I’ve also seen her ignore them as they’re either dropping stuff or pulling apart the decking on the front stairs and I’ve also seen other concerning things that she’s ignored).
The kids are young (around 5) so I’m trying to be understanding but her attitude and the fact that every time without fail I go into the garden there’s a broken plant or a wrappers and toys in the pots to the point where I hate going out there because I’ll just get annoyed.
Even the adult guests have the same flippant attitude and called my mum a bad neighbour because she didn’t want to give one of the balls back since they’ll just throw it over again.
I had to talk to them again today after the incident with my mum and didn’t really get anywhere and it’s making me wonder if I’m just over reacting because of the kids ages. How would you handle this?
What hobbies are the UK perfect for?
If you've got varied hobbies like me, you've probably noticed that some hobbies just aren't always ideal in our climate, or have little community.
Which has got me thinking, what hobbies thrive particularly well in the UK?
