Filet crochet thread keeps twisting as I work on the pattern
Hello,
I'm learning filet crochet. I've done a three basic small patterns but before I move on to anything more complex, I wanted to ask if anyone else experiences their thread twisting a lot on itself?

I am using an old thread from a relative's stash. It is cotton and recommends using a hook 1.5mm. I'm using 1.25m.
As I work, I often have to smooth the thread. It coils in on itself regularly.
I've not seen anyone mention this in videos or blog posts I have read. I don't have any other thread at the moment, so I can't compare with anything else. Is it likely an issue with my old thread or is there something I should work on in my technique?
