Anyone have experience with a buyer requesting cancellation after you ship/stating they purchased on accident?

Hi everyone, I have been selling on eBay for a few years now, but it is not something I do very frequently. I have never had a buyer try to cancel an order before, nor have I experienced someone who has purchased something “accidentally”. I do not allow returns, as obviously I cannot guarantee that it will come back to me in the condition it left in. Monday night at roughly 9pm I got a notification that my laptop sold. It was priced at $1,060 (gaming laptop). I created my label, (pirate ship) and boxed it up nicely that way it was ready to go in the morning, and then I went to bed. I work mornings, so I do not stay up late. Also, take note that the buyer is on the other side of the country, and 3 hours behind me. Tuesday morning I got up, got ready for work and hit ups right as they opened before going to work. Once I was at work I got on eBay to upload the tracking and was met with a cancellation request. The buyers comment was “I was browsing for laptops and purchased the wrong one, I apologize for any inconveniences. Im gonna try and cancel same day at no cost.” I obviously hit marked as shipped since I had already dropped it off, which declined the request. I messaged him politely and just let him know that I shipped the laptop that morning and did not see his cancellation request until I went to input the shipping info. His response was - “I know you want to sell this item and get your money, but I'm not gonna take it. I purchased this item by mistake (I'm sorry) and cancelled in about 4 hours of purchase, and at night.
From what I understand so far:
- you saw the purchase before bed
- I cancelled after 4 hours, which is rather quick
- you woke up and went through with the shipping without seeing my cancellation request
From my side, it seems weird like you're forcing me to take it. So if that's all true, this is going to be a lot of time just for me to send the item back, regardless of
"returns not accepted."
I will most likely have eBay step in as unfortunately I have been in this situation before. I use this platform alot.
I'm sorry for the time wasted on my end but more time will be wasted now.”
Again, this person is 3 hours behind me. Four hours from purchase in my time zone is 1am. I was asleep by 11. eBay didn’t send me any notifications so when I turned on my phone there was nothing urging me to check eBay. I’ve always shipped packages right after they’re purchased and have never dealt with this. Considering I don’t allow returns and this laptop is going all the way from the east coast to California… I don’t trust its return anyway. The conversation went back and forth a few times with him being rather rude, and me keeping my cool until I told him I’m not further discussing the matter while the laptop is in transit. It’s eta to him is Monday. What can I expect from this if he contacts eBay? I followed through with what I was supposed to do. It is not my fault he accidentally bought it. eBay only charged him $15 for shipping, but I actually paid $37. I do have proof of the laptop working and being accurately described and pictures of my packing process as I always anticipate a possible scammer who will say the item isn’t as described. My funds are on hold due to it being a high priced item, so I have not received any payment for it yet. If anyone has experience with something similar, please let me know. I have anxiety about how this will go. I insured the laptop ($1,060) for its travels there, so I’m not as stressed about a transit issue.
