Thinking about Colorado…

Hey! I’m in the Midwest, kids in grade school and a wife, in a great city (Madison), but work remotely and don’t have many friends here despite living here for 5 years. I miss my friends and the outdoors in Colorado, where I lived 15 years ago, and the front range is the hub of the industry I work in. I feel insecure in my employment and suspect I’ll be moving on in 2-5 years. Worth noting that my elderly in-laws live in Chicago, about 2 hours away.

Should I relocate and give up my 2.6% mortgage to be closer to the people and lifestyle I crave? Or should I wait this out and only move when necessary? My wife is good either way, and can easily job hop and doesn’t make any significant money here anyway.

So: stay here for the cheaper housing and in-law proximity, or go where the longer term career lives and better lifestyle but more expensive?
