Incorrect Insurance begin date.
On April 27, 2026, I contacted Progressive to request a quote for a new auto insurance policy because my existing policy had recently been extended through autopay on April 24, 2026. During that call, I was informed that the recently charged extension payment could not be refunded or cancelled at that time. The representative then discussed a new policy quote with me, and the quoted policy had an effective date of May 27, 2026, which would begin after the current billing cycle of my extended policy.
On April 30, 2026, I contacted Progressive again because the payment link for the new policy was not working properly. During that call, I asked whether I could purchase the new policy and have my old policy cancelled. The representative advised that this could be done and proceeded with the transaction. My previous policy was cancelled during that same call, and Progressive charged my bank account for the new policy on April 30, 2026.
To the best of my recollection, I do not recall being clearly informed or advised that cancelling the prior policy would create a lapse in coverage before the new policy’s effective date. My understanding at the time was that I was continuing my insurance coverage by purchasing the new policy during the same call and same transaction in which the prior policy was cancelled.
We never reviewed the effective date of the new policy which is on me, if the link was to work I would able to be able to review the document before sign and cancel my old policy.
What can be done in this situation? I got into a car accident and I was not at fault, the other party is uninsured motorist.
Any advice is appreciated, my case is being reviewed right now
