About a decade ago, my 2 best friends & I were having a silly discussion about pet peeves. The subject of toilet paper rolls left empty on the holder came up.
I told them that, while it’s annoying to find, it doesn’t particularly bother me to change the roll as much as it seems to annoy others. So, I just do it.
I go on to say that if I’m using the bathroom at my family or friends’ house, notice the TP is empty, & am familiar with where it’s kept, I’ll change that roll, as well.
Like a kind of TP fairy, right? WRONG!
One of my friends immediately stops smiling. She asks if I’ve ever done that at her house. I tell her I have…several times. Especially when her kids were smaller, & things were more hectic in her household.
We’d been friends for almost 30 years ATP, so I didn’t think she’d mind. Turns out the empty rolls had been left on purpose. Her youngest liked to go crazy (at the time) unrolling freshly changed TP.
She & her husband would often wake up the morning after having guests, find a pile of TP on the bathroom floor, & wonder “HOW?”, since they agreed to leave the rolls empty, even during get togethers. [*SEE ETA]
They started blaming each other. He said she was secretly putting rolls on when guests came over, because the empty rolls embarrassed her. She said it was him that was embarrassed, trying to blame her.
Both refused to admit wrongdoing. That questionable trust between them put a strain on their marriage for over 3 years…until a light conversation between us gals revealed the truth.
(FWIW, I apologized profusely, & told her, once the 2 of them had their own conversation about things, I was more than willing to answer any questions her husband might have. They worked it out & we laugh about it now.
I also no longer change empty TP rolls outside my home without prior permission!)
*ETA: TP was available during gatherings at their home. A roll would be put out within a reachable distance from where you were sitting, but high enough that the kids couldn’t access it without assistance. They just left an empty roll on the holder. Sorry for not specifying! 🙂
