Mandatory attendance and class participation - workshops to gather staff and student views

Hi everyone - have you ever had mandatory attendance guidelines and been confused? Or tried to figure out how you're graded on class participation and it seems like it is "vibes"?

As part of a project by the university's Teaching and Learning Committee, I'm working with a student (UTS Council rep Chloe Ferreira) on a project to clarify and improve our mandatory attendance and class participation policies/guidelines.

We'd love to hear from our community (staff and students) about their experiences - your icks or red flags, what works, how we can improve. If you're coming on campus - since it is around lunch time - we'll be feeding you as well!

PSA - AI detectors

Hi everyone - I received a disturbing report from a student today that their tutor stated that they would put all of their assessment submissions through Claude to detect whether they were written by AI.

UTS does NOT condone the use of AI detectors and as a Misconduct person - I would reject any case based on a misconduct detector report as the sole piece of evidence.

Legally - we should not be putting your assessments into any commercial AI tool - this is your intellectual property.

I am working to follow up on this - but if you’ve got an academic who has either done this or said that they will do this, please report to the Director of Students or Director of Education in your faculty. Or if you cannot find who that person is, the Associate Dean Education & Students.

Please check your email before contacting your coordinator

Hi everyone - I know we’re all quite stressed out.

Many coordinators emailed students late Friday or over the weekend with an update and a plan for what is going to happen in the coming week.

However, I’ve received a flood of emails today from my students that indicates they didn’t even check to look for previous instructions before emailing asking what is happening with assignments and quizzes.

Please check to see if you’ve received something before you contact us 🙏
