Master Copy - Vermeer's "The Geographer"
20x20 Oil on Canvas
I recently completed a master copy of Johannes Vermeer's The Geographer (c. 1668) using traditional Old Master techniques.
The process began with an underpainting to establish the initial light/shadow structure. From there, I developed a full grisaille layer, resolving the painting's complete value structure. Finally, color was applied in thin glazes, allowing the underlying values to breathe through and produce that characteristic luminosity associated with Old Master painting.
This method taught me more about value, edge control, and light behavior than any other exercise in my practice. One painting. Three stages.
