Chargers stuck on “Starting”

2026 R1S. Home charger is an older Gen2 Tesla wall charger that works great. Have road tripped numerous times using Tesla Superchargers through both plug and play and using the Tesla app to initiate the charge. Have also used hotel destination chargers with no issues in the past. Then came today:

Charged to 100% this morning using my garage charger for a long road trip. Arrived at my in-laws with 34 miles of range left. Had to do some stuff and at around 11pm I grabbed my new Tesla Mobile Charger (came with my 2026 Model Y, tested with the R1S previously and it worked fine) and plugged it into the house. The Rivian charging screen was stuck on “starting” with a spinning wheel. Unplug/replug multiple times…same thing. Refused to start charging.

Didn’t think much about it as my in-laws house is quite old and electrical issues wouldn’t be out of the ordinary. A brand new Tesla Supercharger is 1.2 miles away so I drove over there arriving with 28 miles of range. I plug in the Supercharger…”Starting” with the spinning wheel. Now my gut turns a bit.

I do a full hard reset. Plug in the Supercharger…”starting.” Oh no. Am I going to have to leave my truck 300 miles from home and get a rental car home? I call roadside. They are not much help as they go through their checklist…most of which I’ve already done and/or confirmed (yes, I’m at a compatible supercharger). The one thing they say is I could try and kick off the charging from the Tesla app. I do that and it suddenly works. Whew. I charge up to 60%.

Out of curiosity I end the Tesla-initiated session, unplug, and replug…this SHOULD work and has worked in the past. But it is just spinning wheel with “starting.” Won’t charge. I unplugged and started another session through the Tesla app and it worked fine.

Roadside was trying to tell me it may be a billing issue but that doesn’t explain why the basic mobile charger plugged into a wall outlet didn’t work (also my card is valid and fine). So I’m hoping that I can get home on Sunday using Tesla app-initiated supercharging. Then the big test will be if my garage wall charger still works.

Just thought I’d post if anyone has seen this behavior.

WiFi Mystery "Network Issues"

2026 R1S. Reaching the end of my rope on this one.

Today I went out to check the status of the system update only to see it "paused." I checked the connection to my home WiFi and it had an X through it with the message "No internet connection - Network issues." Weird. Note that I have a mesh node in my garage no more than 15 feet from the R1. Here is what I've done. Currently have 50+ connected devices with zero issues.

  • Toggled WiFi on/off. Connects for about 10 seconds, changes to the "Network issues" message.
  • Selected my Guest network. Same behavior.
  • Forgot the network, reconnected. Same.
  • Rebooted the WiFi node in the garage. Same.
  • Soft rebooted the vehicle. Same.
  • Hard rebooted the vehicle. Same.
  • Rebooted my router and all my mesh nodes. Same.
  • Connected to my phone's hot spot. Connection held. No error.

Now here's the kicker...When I toggle the WiFi off the Rivian app shows WiFi as disconnected. But once it tries to reconnect, the app shows full strength "excellent" WiFi. Even while the car shows "No internet connection - Network issues" the app shows a solid connection. Not sure if the SUV is throwing a false error perhaps? But the system update still shows as "paused." The attached two pics were taken at the same time.

What am I missing? Next logical would be a service appointment, but if the connection is seemingly holding on my phone's hotspot, I'm thinking it would be a "could not replicate" situation.
