“This Land Is Your Land” is not a feel-good anthem.
Americans always say this is an anthem for the ages. Pete Seeger was himself always very conscious of the unanswered issues of theft and displacement. Schoolchildren began to use the song, including the shortened version, and as its popularity grew its protest roots were lost. Today, the song is a jingoistic feel-good version of all things American. But only for some Americans. Definitely not First Nations.
Don't you feel a little uncomfortable with this? I know I would. We don't sing it much in Canada, where it never had the same history.
