Basically my question, what in terms of proper long distance touring have there been big advances in technology since the 90s.

Brother is planning for his first tour (coast to coast USA) and is convinced he needs to spend a fortune on a bike, his every day ride is a solid fork hard tail with a Rohloff eg perfect.

He wont have it that my tourer is as good as a new fancy bike (steel mtb with deore xt /hope)

What are we saying?

been working as a carpenter for a few years, ive always considered the idea of doing my own restoration project but never really got things moving, i would like to work with an experienced carpenter to gain some knowledge/skills while getting a taste of what its like as a prospect for me. M46 British national, Hard worker, easy going, quite comfortable roughing it a bit if staying on site/remote location, have van and tools and would be available for summer 26.
