I’ve been trying to get better at invisible mending, and I’ve run into a situation that’s been harder than I expected.
The garment I’m working on has some wear, so the fabric isn’t uniform anymore, the color has faded slightly in some areas, and the texture feels different compared to less-used parts.
When I try to match thread, it looks fine at first, but once the repair is done, it still catches the eye depending on lighting or angle. It’s not obvious damage, but it’s also not fully “invisible” either.
What’s tricky is that the original fabric and the current fabric almost feel like two different materials now, even though it’s the same piece.
So I’m curious how more experienced people approach this:
Do you try to match the current worn state of the fabric, or aim for the original color/texture and let it blend over time?
And are there any techniques you use to make repairs disappear better when the fabric has aged unevenly?
Would really appreciate any advice or tips here.
