Ex sent a follow request "by mistake" right before our anniversary. Was it intentional? Will he reach out again?

Hey Reddit,

Need some quick perspective on my ex. We were together for a year (very toxic, on-and-off). I finally walked away 3 months ago because he consistently prioritized his female friends over me. Since then, we've been completely no-contact and unfollowed each other everywhere (my account is private).

May is a huge month for us. This exact time last year we were deeply in love, leading up to our official "anniversary" on May 18th.

On the night of May 17th—literally hours before that anniversary day started—he sent me a follow request. He used to stalk me in the past but never made a mistake like this before.

I accepted his request just to lower his guard and show him I wouldn't attack him if he wanted to talk, but I did not follow him back.

Exactly 15 minutes later, he slid into my DMs with this: "Sorry, I think this follow was made by mistake. I didn't notice it until I got the notification."

I think his ego was bruised because I didn't follow him back, so he panicked and used the "accident" excuse to save his pride. I replied bluntly: "I figured. No worries at all." Then, he dropped a heart react (❤️) on my message and left it at that. Since I didn't follow back, he’s still completely in the dark.

I'm convinced it wasn't a mistake. The timing, the 15-minute gap, and the heart react just don't add up to a glitch.

Two questions for you guys:

  1. Do you think this follow request was 100% intentional?
  2. Based on that heart emoji after I shut down his excuse, do you think he will actually try to reach out again?
