Why does every fandom have THAT one ship discourse?
I swear every fandom has at least ONE ship war that gets so intense that you can mention two character names together and suddenly you’re watching a 47-comment argument about narrative symbolism, media literacy, canon, subtext, and why your fictional relationship is objectively superior 😭
And somehow, the same arguments keep happening over and over again.
**1. Zutara vs. Kataang —**
**Avatar: The Last Airbender**
This is basically the blueprint for modern internet shipping wars.
**The conflict:** Kataang (Katara/Aang) vs. Zutara (Katara/Zuko).
Kataang fans point to the fact that Aang and Katara were the intended canon pairing, built around childhood friendship, mutual support, and Aang’s feelings for Katara developing throughout the series.
Zutara fans, meanwhile, leaned heavily into the enemies-to-lovers potential, the whole fire-and-water symbolism, and the emotional parallels between Zuko and Katara. Their argument was basically: “Look at these two characters and tell me there isn’t INSANE chemistry here.”
And the discourse got so ridiculous that the show itself basically made fun of the shipping war in **“The Ember Island Players.”**
The funniest part?
The show ended in 2008 and people STILL argue about whether Kataang was organically developed or whether Zutara would have made more narrative sense.
**IT HAS BEEN 18 YEARS.** 😭
**2. Destiel —**
**Supernatural**
If you were anywhere near Tumblr during the 2010s, you could not escape this one.
**The conflict:** Destiel (Dean Winchester/Castiel).
This wasn’t even just a “which ship do you prefer?” debate anymore. It became an entire conversation about subtext, queerbaiting, representation, and whether the writers were intentionally dangling the possibility of a queer relationship in front of fans without ever intending to make it canon.
For YEARS, fans analyzed everything.
The eye contact.
The dialogue.
The emotional dependency.
The way Dean and Castiel interacted.
Every single moment could apparently be submitted as evidence in the Supreme Court of Destiel.
And then in 2020, Castiel confessed his love to Dean before sacrificing himself.
The internet subsequently LOST ITS MIND.
The phrase **“Destiel is canon”** became an entire cultural event, especially because it happened alongside major real-world news that made the situation even more surreal.
At that point, Destiel wasn’t just a ship anymore.
It was an internet historical event.
**3. Reylo —**
**Star Wars**
This one somehow managed to turn shipping discourse into a debate about morality, media literacy, abuse, redemption, and whether fictional relationships should be treated as relationship advice.
**The conflict:** Reylo (Rey/Kylo Ren).
Opponents argued that the relationship was toxic and pointed toward abusive dynamics, especially considering Kylo’s treatment of Rey throughout the trilogy.
Supporters saw it differently, interpreting their relationship as a dark fairy-tale romance involving spiritual connection, redemption, and healing.
And instead of simply going:
“I don’t like this ship.”
“I do.”
The fandom somehow escalated into:
**“Your interpretation of this fictional relationship says something fundamentally concerning about you as a person.”**
Then *The Rise of Skywalker* happened.
Rey and Ben kissed.
Ben died.
And somehow **EVERYONE was mad.**
Reylos got their kiss but lost Ben.
Anti-Reylos got confirmation that the relationship was canon but still had to watch it happen.
Nobody won.
**4. Cloud/Tifa vs. Cloud/Aerith —**
**Final Fantasy VII**
This one has survived for nearly THREE DECADES.
**The conflict:** Cloti (Cloud/Tifa) vs. Clerith (Cloud/Aerith).
The original *Final Fantasy VII* gave players enough dialogue variation and ambiguity for fans to dissect basically every interaction Cloud had with both women.
And fandom did what fandom does best:
**weaponized every single line of dialogue.**
Cloti fans emphasize Cloud and Tifa’s history, emotional connection, and grounded relationship.
Clerith fans emphasize Cloud and Aerith’s chemistry, their emotional connection, and the more tragic/ethereal nature of their relationship.
And every new piece of *Final Fantasy VII* media provides another 500 pieces of evidence for someone.
The Remake trilogy basically poured gasoline on a fire that had already been burning since 1997.
Almost 30 years later, people are STILL debating who Cloud should be with.
At this point, I’m convinced Cloud himself would like everyone to leave him alone.
And that’s what gets me about fandom shipping wars.
**They’re literally everywhere.**
Zutara vs. Kataang.
Destiel vs. basically every Dean ship.
Reylo.
Cloti vs. Clerith.
And that’s not even scratching the surface.
Every fandom eventually seems to develop **The Ship Discourse™** where two fictional relationships become opposing political parties and suddenly everyone has a 14-page dissertation explaining why their ship is superior.
And honestly?
I love fandom.
I love shipping.
I love analyzing character relationships.
But sometimes I just want to look at two fictional idiots holding hands without someone appearing from the shadows to explain why my interpretation of their relationship is morally, narratively, and philosophically incorrect. 😭
**What fandom’s ship discourse do you think deserves to be on this list?**
