Shin splints are rude

Finally started getting consistent with running and was actually feeling proud of myself for once. then my shins decided they absolutely hated this new lifestyle and now every step feels like my legs are roasting me for trying to improve. somebody at work noticed me limping and asked if i got injured doing something cool which honestly made this even more embarrassing. the annoying part is running has been helping me sleep better and stress less so i really dont wanna stop completely. i already cut my distance down but the soreness still shows up after runs. ive been stretching a little but i honestly have no clue if im even doing the right stuff.

For people who dealt with shin pain early on what actually helped you recover without losing progress, and how do you stay safe from making it worse while still staying active?

Thank y'all in advance!!
