When You’re Already at 30 LPA: Is an MBA Still a Smart Bet?

GEM | Cybersecurity in M&A | MBA Dilemma – India vs Abroad

I’m a GEM working in an MNC, currently in Cybersecurity within M&A, with ~2.7 years of experience and a compensation of around ₹30 LPA. While the pay and role are good on paper, I increasingly feel underutilised relative to my potential.

Long term, I want to stay in the M&A space and gradually transition from the technical/risk side into the business side of M&A / deal implementation. This has led me to seriously consider whether an MBA would actually help accelerate that transition.

I recently spoke to a CAT mentor who suggested:

  • Given my GEM background, I’d likely need 99+ percentile to realistically target IIM ABC.
  • Even after that, breaking into top-tier M&A / strategy consulting with a compensation significantly higher than ₹35 LPA isn’t guaranteed.
  • In contrast, if I stay in my current role and grow organically for the next ~3 years, I could potentially reach or exceed that compensation anyway - without taking a career break.

His suggestion was to look at MBAs outside India, especially if I want a smoother transition into the business side of M&A. However, my biggest concern there is ROI:

  • Spending ₹50–60+ lakhs (or more),
  • Taking a large education loan,
  • And then spending several years repaying it - feels risky, especially when I’m already on a strong compensation trajectory.

So, I’m genuinely conflicted:

  • Does an MBA (India or abroad) meaningfully improve my chances of moving into business‑side M&A?
  • Or am I better off staying in the ecosystem, building deal exposure, and making a lateral/internal transition over time?
  • For people in similar profiles - or who’ve taken either path - what actually worked?

Would love to hear honest thoughts from the community.

Advice on muscle building

I’ve lost 10+ kgs over the last few months through yoga, cleaner eating, and recently started running + swimming while preparing for a triathlon. It’s been great physically and mentally, but I’m worried I’m becoming “skinny fat.”

I’m lighter now, but not really looking athletic or muscular yet — still carrying some fat around the stomach/chest area. Since most of my training is endurance-focused, I’m wondering if I need strength training to actually look toned.

I’m 28, 5’10”, ~74kg now, and I’ve never seriously lifted before. I don’t really want to live in the gym though — I enjoy yoga, running, swimming, and football much more.

So my question is:

  1. Can 2-3 strength sessions a week be enough to build visible muscle alongside triathlon training?

  2. Would bodyweight/calisthenics work initially?

3.How do people balance endurance sports with building an athletic physique?

Hey Bangalore!

Recently went through a breakup after 5 years, and while I'm processing it well, I've realized I need to expand my circle and meet new people. Not looking for anything rushed or forced – just genuine connections with emotionally mature folks who value honesty and kindness.

A bit about me:

26M, working professional

Quiet and patient by nature.

I genuinely believe we're all just trying our best and deserve compassion and empathy.

What I enjoy:

  1. Weekend walks in Cubbon Park (there's something therapeutic about it)

  2. Long drives in my car

  3. Running

  4. Currently learning to swim (never too late, right?) preparing for a Triathlon !

Genuinely interested in hearing from anyone who's navigated a tough phase of life and found their way back to themselves – would love to learn from your journey and what helped you grow through it.

If you're someone who values real conversations over small talk and believes in being kind without judgment, let's connect!
