Fixed the ghost input/no input due to screen delamination for $90 - Screen/Digitizer Replacement

Fixed the ghost input/no input due to screen delamination for $90 - Screen/Digitizer Replacement

Parts #: TFT C065VAT01

Context: I started experiencing the ghost/phantom input last year and it progressively worsened.

Subaru extended their warranty for these units due to the defect involving screen delamination which is susceptible to failure in high heat/summer.

Unfortunately for me, they would not honor my claim due to my dumbass cracking the screen.

(Don't do this) I managed to make my bad screen work by shimming a piece of plastic to apply enough pressure.

Eventually that failed, and in my frustration I pushed too hard and made a nice hairline crack across the screen. This resulted in only one corner of the touchscreen working. Only had access to certain functions in car play, no access to settings, EQ, etc.

Anyways, I got curious and figured why the hell not. I took the head unit out and disassembled it. Turns out, they're pretty robust and easy to work on.

Removed the screen and digitizer. Found a parts # on it, plugged it in on eBay and found a 1:1 screen replacement.

3 weeks, 3 ribbon cables, and a dozen torx screws later, I was able to swap the old one out to my surprise the new one works fantastic!

All in, it took about 1 hour to complete.

TLDR instructions:

Remove front vents, and 4 Phillips head screws mounting the head unit.

Disconnect cables

Pull unit.

Remove 9 T9 screws holding the black trim/bezel/screen in place.

Gently pry from the metal frame of the unit. This will separate the front of the head unit from the back. It connects via quick connect/snap connector.

Remove 12x T9 screws on the display board

The board and heat shield should be loose now.

You can now remove the screen by detaching the 3 ribbon cables.

Replace and reassemble.

I did take some video footage in case people were interested in seeing it done.
