



I’m asking this question in good faith because I’m trying to understand the traditional Islamic position, not to mock or attack anyone’s beliefs. I’m looking for academic answers rather than apologetic ones.
As I understand the traditional Islamic narrative:
If this is the traditional understanding, then I don’t see how the first generations of humanity could have multiplied without incest.
Unless additional humans were created independently (which, as far as I know, is not the mainstream traditional view), Adam and Eve’s children would have had only one option: reproducing with their own siblings.
From what I’ve read, many classical Muslim scholars accepted that sibling marriages took place in the first generation and argued that they were temporarily permitted.
My first question is:
Is this actually the mainstream position in classical Islamic scholarship, or am I misunderstanding something?
If it is the mainstream position, then my second question is about consistency.
Today, incest—especially between siblings—is considered both morally problematic and biologically dangerous. I’m aware that the moral argument is usually answered by saying that it was temporarily permitted by God. However, I’m not asking about the moral or theological justification.
I’m asking about the biological side.
Modern genetics tells us that reproduction between siblings carries a very high risk of recessive genetic disorders and other inherited diseases. Furthermore, if an entire population began from one family and continued reproducing within close relatives for multiple generations, we would expect a severe loss of genetic diversity and a significant increase in harmful mutations.
So my questions are:
I’m not looking for answers like “God made it possible” or “God suspended the normal laws of biology,” because those are theological claims rather than biological explanations.
I’m interested in understanding whether there is an academically developed response to this problem within contemporary Islamic thought.
