Does anyone else miss the old IRC trivia channels?
I was thinking about the old mIRC trivia channels from the early 2000s.
You’d join a room where a bot posted a new question every 20–30 seconds. Hundreds of people would race to answer first, there were leaderboards, regulars, rivalries, and conversations between questions. You could join for 5 minutes or end up staying for 3 hours.
I’ve played plenty of modern trivia apps (QuizUp, Kahoot, Discord bots, etc.), but none of them really recreate that feeling of an always-on public room where strangers compete together.
Is this just nostalgia talking, or do you think something like that could actually work today?
A few questions I’m curious about:
- What made those old trivia channels so addictive?
- What do today’s trivia apps get wrong?
- Would you ever use a 24/7 live trivia room if it existed?
- What would make you come back every day?
- And on the flip side—why do you think this wouldn’t work anymore?
