[Testements episode 9] Becka opinion

Repost of my post that was deleted for the title:

If becka was a man she would be considered a hero

If a male character who grew up in a society where there are no jails and sexual crimes are only resolved with mutilation or death, and that character found out that his father sexually abused the love of his life and responded by killing him, it would be seen as romantic heroism in the context of the story.

Ive seen people say it does not make sense for her character, but it does- she loves Agnes, she does not want this life set up for her and is not motivated to pursue it and protect her future, she has already expressed her desire to run away with Agnes.

She has been told and shown her whole life that what God wants for these kind of men is violent punishment or death, she was totally rational in believing she was doing the right thing, doing God's will, and being brave.

It makes sense she wasnt close with her father, at best he saw her as a pet or accessory with how he abused girls (however i disagree with the notion of him abusing her in the show even though it happened in the book).

At worst she acted impulsively, not considering how this could have a negative outcome for her, but she is still a child. Thats kind of what they are known for.

In summary if there are children raised to be religious zealots accustomed to relgiously justified violence you can't be surprised that someone will react violently to a situation like this, especially when passionate love is involved.
