I've looked at 75k casual Commander games to give you some EDH color identity stats

Heya,

Last time we talked about the Commander tier list, this time I wanted to share some color identity stats with you.

A few caveats before we begin:

  • This is from games tracked with our life counter (playgroup.gg).
  • Data is from the last 90 days.
  • This data is mostly just fun to look at, I'm not trying to make broad statements about EDH in general.
  • Data might be skewed because our users care above average about stats.
  • I've looked at around 75k games.
  • Coverage means how many of the Commanders for that identity were played during the last 90 days.
  • Game concentration is how many top commanders it takes to reach 50% of all games for that identity. Lower = more concentrated around a few popular picks.

Now let's get to it!

Overall winners across all identities:

  • Most Games Played: Five Color with 18k games, 50% more compared to the 2nd place: Naya with around 12k games.
  • Most Commanders Used: Black with 214 different Commanders. Red was a close second with 204 Commanders.
  • Fastest, no surprise here: Red with 7.8 rounds. (6% faster compared to Green which was second)
  • Highest coverage: Mardu with 97.5% (39 of 40). Only 1 Mardu commander hasn't shown up. Small selection of Commanders though.
  • Least game concentration: Tied between Blue and Green with 17 Commanders each.

Mono color stats:

  • Most games played: Red with 9k games
  • Most Commanders Used: Black again, with 214 different Commanders.
  • Fastest: Red again with 7.8 rounds.
  • Highest coverage: Green with 64.8% (193 of 298)
  • Game concentration: Red is the most top-heavy with just 12 commanders making up 50% of all mono Red games. Blue and Green are the most spread out at 17 each.

Two color stats:

  • Most Games Played: Golgari with 11k games played, around 1000 more than the runner up Orzhov.
  • Most Commanders Used: Boros with 124 Commanders winning with just two Commanders over Rakdos.
  • Fastest to Win: Shared place for Izzet / Gruul with 8.4 rounds.
  • Highest coverage: Simic at 80.6% (112 of 139).
  • Game concentration: Orzhov, Golgari, and Simic are the most concentrated at just 8 commanders each for 50% of games. Selesnya is the most spread out at 14.

Three color stats:

  • Most Games Played: Naya with around 12k as mentioned before.
  • Most Commanders Used: Grixis with 59 Commanders.
  • Fastest to Win: Temur with 8.5 rounds.
  • Again Mardu with the highest coverage rate at 97.5%
  • Game concentration: Bant, Sultai, and Jund are the most concentrated at just 3 commanders each for 50% of games. Grixis is the most spread out at 8.

Anything in these stats that surprised you? For me it was mostly discovering how few Commanders you need to get to 50% of the games. Definitely thought this would be more spread out.

If you want to review all this and more I've added a live updating overview of most of this on the Playgroup.gg Commander Colors page.

We've had over 24k games tracked over at playgroup.gg the last 30 days and I was curious to see which Commanders consistently have a high win-rate. A few caveats:

  • All users are basically self-reporting so no way to rule out fake data.
  • I only looked at games that have at least 40 games tracked and have 10 different pilots playing them.
  • Even with 24k games tracked some data points are a bit thin.
  • It's still fun to look at!

So hereby the top 3 s-tier commanders (above 35% win rate), they were definitely not what I was expecting:

  1. [[Kambal, Profiteering Mayor]] at a 46.95% win rate

  2. [[Prossh, Skyraider of Kher]] at a 46.51% win rate

  3. [[Heliod, the Radiant Dawn // Heliod, the Warped Eclipse]] at a 46.2% win rate.

Interestingly enough [[Helliod, Sun-Crowned]] also shows up on the S-tier list at number 6. It's a good time to be Heliod. [[Sythis, Harvest's hand]] which completely dominates the leaderboards (since we started tracking) in our own playgroup sits as a meager spot 7.

I've got an auto updating tier list page up if you want to dive a bit deeper and see a/b/c tier Commanders.

All with all not what I expected, might be sample size though. Curious to hear what you all think.
