RECA is going to give my mom (and lots of other American survivors) $100K!
I am not sure how to tag this but it’s exciting news!
The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act apparently expanded last year to include literally every breast* cancer survivor who can prove that she or he lived anywhere in New Mexico* for at least one year between 1944 and 1962! It was pretty easy to prove and I’m honestly gobsmacked. My mother has never had this much money at once in her life and she lost YEARS of her retirement building/Social Security contribution life to cancer.
*other cancers qualify, and lots of other places in the US Southwest, definitely worth looking into if you know anyone who might qualify
It’s also grim and sad that the radiation exposure is only now being recognized and compensated and that younger survivors are left out (I strongly suspect that contaminated New Mexico soil contributed to my cancer as well as my mom’s) but there’s a step in the right direction
