What are some best practices for winding very snarly yarn?

I bought some very gorgeous, somewhat pricey yarn and I'm intimidated. It's a silk/mohair blend, in a fingerling weight. Very pretty, very fine, very fluffy, deep purple. I started winding the hank and then got worried it would snarl up once wound into a ball.

Any words of wisdom on how to prevent tangling once it is wound? I think outer pull vs center pull is prudent. Anything else? Feels that if this gets a tangle, there's no coming back.

I'm planning to do a very simple mesh scarf.
