Rode my first Waymo in San Diego! My thoughts within

tl;dr: Great experience for the most part.

I live within the service area for San Diego, which made being accepted into the beta a great treat. For those in San Diego, I live in the Hillcrest area specifically.

Yesterday I went to Mission Beach that is also in the service area. I don't get wet, I just bring my beach chair and enjoy the waves for a couple hours before heading home.

Sometimes I don't like to drive, and Lyft/Uber is my least favorite option just because they are always concerned that I am wet and have to clarify to them I've wiped all the possible sand off from my chair and that I didn't go in the water.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that when I selected to go Mission Beach, it was just about a 4 minute wait. Waymo arrival made sense, and quickly went on the journey. The price both ways was about what I would have to pay if I would have taken Uber/Lyft.

To my own fault, I didn't check how long the actual trip was. It's been hot as hell in San Diego, so I wasn't mad about being in the AC of the Waymo for longer. But I didn't realize it was a 50 minute trip just to get to Mission Beach. Traditionally this trip is about 15 minutes if you drive or take an Uber/Lyft. The reason for this is because Waymo doesn't go on freeways, so it takes the most obnoxious route possible which I realized I should have checked the time, as I had a specific window of time to be at the beach and so I didn't stay as long as I traditionally would have as a result of that long travel time.

On the way back, the trip was shorter, about 35 minutes. Not egregious, but still about double the time it would take to drive myself or take an Uber/Lyft. It was also a bit awkward because it goes into the Parking lot for arrival at Mission Beach, and it had a very specific spot it wanted to meet me at. I was right next to the Waymo in one of the lanes of the parking lot, but it still wanted to spend the next 3 minutes slowly getting to its pre-determined spot. As a QOL feeature, I would have loved for it to recognize I'm literally right next to it and to let me in so we could save some time and depart faster.

It was a treat to just listen to my podcasts, ample leg room as someone that is tall, AC, and generally just chill out and turn my brain off, which isn't possible when driving or depending if you have a chatty ride share driver. I didn't think it took any crazy maneuvers that made me nervous, was definitely safer than a lot of Ubers/Lyfts I've been in.

Would I use it again? I am unsure. I am in a pretty central part of San Diego where I already don't need to use ride share much. The beach is one of my candidates, but I'm not sure how often I can justify 1.5 hours there and back when it's typically 30 minutes if I drive myself or take human based ride share. That turns it into a bit too much of my day being used up if I want to spend more than an hour at the beach plus the combined 1.5 hours of Waymo travel time. 2 hours of the beach and Waymo time is 3.5 hours, where currently 2 hours at the beach if I drive myself is 2.5 hours total spent. That's not even accounting for that when I ready to leave, it was a 10 minute wait for a Waymo to arrive.

I really hope it isn't a slow crawl to get them on the freeways, because for me that's a key unlock to choosing to use it more. I'm already in a walkable area, except when I venture out 5+ miles with Mission Beach being one of my primary ones. I drive to work since my work is well outside the service area, and truthfully I doubt in San Diego they'll ever go to where I actually work.

Fun experience!

Ian Rapoport regarding Sam Darnold on Good Morning Football: "There's a possibility that he will only miss one game but probably a few weeks"

Greatest healer of all time if he plays vs the Commanders

From "Damn this man may never walk again, hip fracture for sure"

To "Still a torn labrum 100%, out 2 months minimum and who knows how he'll be"

To "Really really good news, it's a muscle thing"

To "He may suit up vs the Commanders"

Praise be to GEQBUS, reports say he has the strongest hips of all time.

Can't link it since it's from Rapoport's X and GMFB is not on Bluesky.

Per the Seahawks new ownership press conference today, the Seahawks White Throwback Uniforms Are Coming In 2027

Hype

Now just make their Royal Blue throwbacks their permanent home unis and they'll have a top 3 uniform ensemble in the NFL

It would also follow a convenient trend where every recent Seahawk era had distinguished uniforms separating the eras from each other.

Holmgren Era: The ugly ass ones (Sorry Holmgren, you got screwed on the uni selections)

Pete Carroll Era: The current standard road/home unis

Mike Macdonald Era: Perhaps a future shift to permanent Royal Blue home jerseys, as Macdonald's first year is when the throwback Royal Blues were first introduced and have become a mainstay to wear 2x a year.

Can someone overview the Blizzcon Leaks that have even a little substance to them?

Now that we're in Blizzcon week, I feel like it's also a time when a lot of people start to try to piggy-back on leaks that actually have substance and muddy up the waters by adding things on top of those ones. Along with a "internal slide deck" leak a couple months ago claiming things like an Arthas ARPG is in the works.

Is this the Overview what we could reasonably expect to either be announced / announced and initially shown at BlizzCon this weekend? I'm avoiding things like D4 and WoW as new content to those retail based games are not a surprise.

Starcraft FPS (Seems this is single player, and not Destiny/Helldivers style?)

Warcraft RTS

Classic + (Whatever this fully entails)

Diablo 1 remake (?)

LOA/STD from Corporate Work Advice

Hi everyone,

I've been working at my company for seven years and fortunately feel I have a pretty good rapport with most of my leadership stakeholders and have built a reputation of being a great colleague.

I am beginning a leave of absence in 3 weeks and hoping for experience from someone else who has done this in California. I report directly to a SVP and they were understanding and did not question me, just saying sorry and that if he can help me in any way to let him know.

My tech company has the standard benefits you'd expect, I qualify for FMLA due to my long tenure here and partners with another company for STD claims that handles your leave directly with the employer.

Where I am not as clear on is short term disability.

I've heard it suggested that if you frame burnout correctly, you can qualify for short term disability. I started this process with the leave coordinators and my PCP is also supportive of the general direction. (My psychiatrist is unwilling to sign, not out of not believing me, but it's her policy for all of her patients.)

Where I struggle here and have been hard on myself: I have conditions of burnout, but I don't think there is anything medically that I am diagnosed by via blood draws or other body scans that says "She can't work"

My PCP knowing my work circumstances is aligned when I told her I've worked close to 14 hour days for 1.5 years and feel the impact, but when push comes to shove when she gets sent forms and has to provide medical diagnosed reasons that align to disability, I'm a little nervous she'll back down. She said sure send the forms to her so it's not like the forms will be a blindside, maybe it's me being pessimistic that I will actually get paid for this time away from work and feeling it's too good to be true.. Beaten down by tech if you may.

I had previously explained to my PCP in our more recent visits that it's gotten worse the last two years. I can hardly sleep due to work stress which impacts me and I am struggling to focus at work due to the stress/lack of sleep, which makes me concerned for my own performance moving forward. It is not sleep apnea or things of that nature, I truly know it's the burnout and stress from my career in tech coming back to haunt me.

I know I'm burning out, but I'm concerned despite my PCP's general support if that'll actually be enough once she gets the forms needing medical diagnosed reasons to be on STD. I know FMLA I qualify for, and I'd honestly do the leave unpaid, but I prefer to get paid considering I know I'm going through burnout and need to step away.

I also understand any comments that suggest "If work causes this, you need a plan when your leave ends" I agree and have been working on the exit plan or ways to switch teams. However, this is mainly about successfully having my STD claim approved.

If the USA wins their Round of 32 match, they will play the Round of 16th match July 6th IN Seattle. Get ready for the party.

With the USA having confirmed finishing first in their group, their bracket path is more clear.

July 1st: Round of 32 in Santa Clara, California.

July 6th (if they win): Round of 16 in Seattle.

This will also be the last match Seattle gets to host for the World Cup, they get one round of 32 match and one round of 16 match.

This will be absolute cinema if the US simply wins vs a third place finishing team in the Round of 32.

Seattle will ROAR.
