How to decide what to study at college?

Hi everyone,

I've seen a few posts from people saying they need to choose their college courses soon and are at a loss around what to choose. I've replied to a few of them, and thought I'd post one of the replies here in case it resonates with anyone.

Firstly, take that pressure away that whatever you choose you have to stick to and/or has to be your life forever. Whatever happens will happen, and sometimes people choose paths they don't like which gives them a better understanding of what they do like.

Second, really take a day or two to think about "if money and pressure was not a thing, what do I want to do in life?" or also more specifically "who do I want to help?" Some people think they just want to do nothing all day and chill, but that just means they need a holiday. That stuff gets old really fast.

Find what you want to do in life and work your way backwards on how to get there. Maybe college is good tool for that, maybe it's not. Maybe there are other paths to what you want to do. It's 2026 and you can basically do anything you want and make money for it. You do need to know how, take action, get OK with trying and failing and getting out of your comfort zone quite often.

For example, you might want to be a musician or play guitar for a living. Work backwards and find out how you can make money doing that? Look at people online who do that. How do they make money? Is that what you want? Contact them, have a chat, ask them questions on how they got there, etc. People generally like to chat about what they do.

Always contact people who are doing what you want to do and have already done it. You need to get the ideas in your head into the real world. Even more so if you have multiple options in your heads. Contact people who are doing these thing already. Gathering that evidence will make your choice much easier.
