Experiments with vermis style rendering

Which image rendering method do you prefer?

So basically i was making a cryptid tryptich using photobash and later discovered Vermis™ and after that I wanted to achieve a specific analog-digital effect in my work. Honestly i am still not sure (feedback is welcome) about colors for my frogman poster, but you can see the difference between simple bitmap and vermis-esque techinique.

Although the books are generally consistent in style, it can be seen that from volumes one to three the illustrations have become clearer and more legible. On the other hand, the design of book covers differs more noticeably.

Vol I - halftone + mozaic

Vol II - bitmap (idk what type honestly, looks very retro)

Vol III - bitmap over color

The last image follows this tutorial
(This tutorial is for Photoshop, but I hope it will help with other software as well)

- It's preferable to use CMYK instead of RGB if you want to achieve a printed effect

- Select a suitable image and desaturate it (it is better to use a resolution of 1500-2500 pixels)

- Convert to smart object

- Increase the image contrast

- Gaussian blur (0.5-2 works)

- Use colored halftones at a 15-45° angle with a minimum size, or apply halftone patterns with the "Hard Mix" blending mode

- Diffusion or a combination of Gaussian blur and sharpening for a printed effect (optional)

- Mosaic (minimum size). Images at right angles may appear odd. Experiment with image sizes and halftone angles

- In my case, I divided the coloring into three layers:

  1. Background;
  2. Shadows (the main image after editing, in which I removed the white colors);
  3. The top layer (main elements). It's best to make a black and white copy underneath them to avoid blending with the background.

Set the entire layer to "Multiply" blending mode

- Then I added a Gaussian blur (0.2-0.5) and sharpened it by about 2x

- If you want to achieve a subtle glow, duplicate the layer. For the top layer, add a blur of about 6-12x and apply a Lighten blending layer. For the bottom layer, keep everything the same

- Add noise to the top layer to achieve a subtle aberration effect

- (Optional) Use curves or blending modes to make the blacks less black to create a printed effect

- Overlay suitable textures (e.g., cracked paper).

I'm open to feedback and this tutorial is not 100% suitable for vermis™ style rendering because real technique remains a secret, the only thing we know from interview is that Plastiboo uses procreate to draw and photoshop to render

Feel free to use and thank you for your attention :)
