Just getting started--am I doing this right?
Hiya! I'm new to this stuff. I recently just got into fitness and I wanted some pointers and guidance, especially on nutrition and exercise regimen.
So I'm a slightly heavy guy, but I truly do mean slightly. I have belly and all that sorts of stuff but I'm 5'6, 180 pounds. My main goal is to build muscle for right now as, to be honest, I don't particularly care to be lean. So I'm looking to gain muscle but still have some meat on my bones if you know what I'm saying. That's why I'm trying to go the body-recomp way instead of just losing weight.
I started going to the gym yesterday and got in 45 minutes of weight-lifting (my arms are killing me) and I've been trying to up my protein while watching my calories and keeping myself in my suggested deficit (2,000 calories)
One thing I've always had a problem with is the amount I eat. Even as a bigger guy, I didn't use to eat all that much. Two meals a day of unhealthy garbage, really. One small (like a burger or cookie or something) than something bigger (like a meal from fastfood or something) but interestingly I've been able to maintain my weight for a good year now with no help of my own accord. Is that normal?
And even more, how do I make sure I keep weight off while gaining muscle? It's been harder than I thought to make even my deficit and I don't want to gain too much weight during this process. Is there anything I can do, or is that just inevitable? Thanks for any help 😭
