Hierarchies where some nodes have two parents: how I handled it in a network graph visual

Disclosure first: I build Power BI custom visuals, and this is about one I made (Zentrix Network Graph). No link in the post. Happy to share it in the comments if anyone wants it.

A question I kept running into while researching relationship data in Power BI: what do you do when a hierarchy isn't really a tree? A company owned by two parent companies, shareholdings split across owners, someone with a dotted-line manager. Hierarchy visuals assume one parent per node, so the second link has nowhere to go.

The underlying problem is that this data is a graph that's mostly a tree. If you're stuck with a one-parent visual, one workaround is to pick a primary parent per row in Power Query and put the second relationship in a tooltip. That works, but the second link is invisible unless you hover.

What I did in the network graph:

- Force layout draws every relationship from just a source and a target column, so you see the network as it actually is.

- Tree layout picks one structural parent per node, so it still reads top-down. Every extra parent is still drawn, as a lighter curved dashed line.

- If you have a parent column you can bind it. If not, it works the hierarchy out from the links: the most connected node becomes the root, then breadth-first from there. Same data gives the same layout every refresh.

- Hovering a node lights up all of its links and lists them in the hover card.

Where it's not a great fit: if most nodes have several parents, it isn't really a hierarchy any more, and the force layout will read better than forcing a tree.

Curious how others model this. Do you keep a "primary parent" column, or a separate bridge table for the extra relationships?

I built an Org Chart visual for Power BI — looking for feedback on the UX

I've been working on an Org Chart visual for Power BI after seeing a few people asking about better ways to handle large parent-child hierarchies.

The main problem I wanted to solve wasn't simply drawing boxes connected by lines. Large hierarchies quickly become difficult to navigate and read.

So I experimented with a few things:

  • ID + Parent ID → automatically builds the hierarchy
  • Expand/collapse branches
  • Keeps names readable instead of shrinking the entire chart
  • Shows the number of items hidden inside collapsed branches
  • Search → jump directly to a person/branch
  • Mini-map for navigating large hierarchies
  • Different ways of viewing the same hierarchy, including a table
  • Handles missing/dangling/self-referencing nodes
  • Preserves collapsed branches across refresh/filter/bookmark

One thing I'm particularly interested in is how people actually use Org Charts in Power BI.

For example:

Do you mainly use them for employee hierarchies, account structures, product hierarchies, BOMs, or something else?

And what usually becomes painful once the hierarchy gets large?

I'm still refining the visual, so I'd genuinely appreciate feedback from people who work with these kinds of datasets.

Two of our Power BI custom visuals (Sankey + Network Graph) just got Microsoft-certified

Hey r/PowerBI,

I'm one of the developers at Zentrix Studio — we make custom visuals for Power BI. Wanted to share that two of ours, Zentrix Sankey Pro and Zentrix Network Graph, just passed Microsoft's certification process.

For anyone not deep into the visuals ecosystem: certification means Microsoft's team has reviewed the visual for code quality, performance, and security (no external calls, etc.), and certified visuals get a few extra perks — like exporting to PowerPoint and rendering in emailed report subscriptions.

Quick rundown:

  • Sankey Pro — flow/relationship visualization between categories. Free to use fully in Desktop.
  • Network Graph — maps connections in your data as an interactive node graph. Available on Pro and Enterprise licensing tiers.

Not trying to just drop links and disappear — happy to answer questions about the certification process itself, or take feedback if you've tried either visual and hit rough edges. Curious what visual types people here still feel are missing from the native Power BI toolkit?

I’m looking for feedback on a Sankey visual I’ve been working on for Power BI

One thing I specifically wanted to do was keep it completely free in Power BI Desktop.

You can use all the features in Desktop without a watermark, time limit, or locked features. The idea is that you should be able to actually build a proper report with it and see whether it works for your use case before worrying about licensing.

Some of the things it supports:

  • Traditional Source → Destination Sankey data
  • Multiple journey/stage columns without manually creating pairs
  • Automatic journey building
  • Drop-off analysis
  • Comparing two values, such as Budget vs Actual
  • Path analysis
  • Node dragging and customization
  • Accessibility features
  • CSV / Excel / PDF export
  • Annotations
  • Some built-in insights around bottlenecks and unusual flows

The visual is currently available on Microsoft Marketplace:

https://marketplace.microsoft.com/en-us/product/zentrixstudio.zentrix-sankey-pro

It has also passed Microsoft certification and should become available as a certified visual in roughly 2 weeks.

But honestly, I’m much more interested in the feedback than promoting it.

If you try it, I'd especially like to know:

1. Does the Sankey actually feel useful compared with the built-in/custom visuals you've used before?

2. Is the data setup intuitive, or is anything confusing?

3. Are there features you expected a Sankey visual to have but don't see here?

4. Does the free-in-Desktop approach make sense to you?

5. If you use Sankey diagrams professionally, what would make you choose one visual over another?

Feel free to be critical — “this is useless because…” is honestly more valuable to me than “looks good.” 😄

I'd really appreciate any feedback, good or bad.

I built a GitHub-style Calendar Heatmap for Power BI — it is now available inside “Get more visuals”. Certification soon.

After working on this for the past few weeks, my Calendar Heatmap custom visual is now searchable directly inside Power BI under:

Get more visuals → Search “Zentrix”

I originally built it because I wanted a simple way to view an entire year of daily activity without relying on a large line chart or table.

Some of the features I ended up adding:

  • Full-year, monthly and multi-year layouts
  • Peak days, streaks and unusual-day insights
  • Actual-versus-target comparisons
  • Conditional rules, badges and annotations
  • Fiscal-year and ISO week support
  • Cross-filtering, tooltips and keyboard navigation
  • Hatch patterns for grayscale and color-blind accessibility

The visual is free. I have also submitted it for Power BI certification, and the review will hopefully be completed within approximately two weeks.

I would genuinely appreciate feedback from people who regularly build Power BI reports—especially regarding usability, missing use cases or features that feel unnecessary.

I built a free GitHub-style Calendar Heatmap visual for Power BI — would love your feedback

Hi everyone,

After months of development, testing, and Microsoft Marketplace certification, I’ve published Zentrix Calendar Heatmap, a free-to-use custom visual for Power BI.

I started building it because analysing daily activity in Power BI often requires either a basic calendar matrix or a heavily customised workaround.

The visual helps users explore:

  • Daily activity across an entire year
  • Peak and unusually low days
  • Weekday patterns and streaks
  • Actual values compared with targets
  • Fiscal-year and multi-year patterns
  • Important dates through annotations

It is available free on Microsoft Marketplace:

https://marketplace.microsoft.com/en-us/product/zentrixstudio.zentrix-calendar-heatmap?tab=Overview

I’d genuinely appreciate feedback from people who regularly build Power BI reports.

In particular:

  1. In what type of report would you use a calendar heatmap?
  2. Which missing feature would stop you from using it?
  3. Does the visual provide enough information without making the report feel crowded?

This is the first custom visual I’ve published independently, so honest criticism is welcome.

Two new things on the Valorant site I'm building — clip/screenshot showcases on your profile, and real-time DMs with any player

Spare 2 min to read it. Thanks.

Solo dev building a social home + tracker for the India Valorant scene. Two features just went live that I think this sub will actually use:
>
>
**🎬 Showcase**
 — every profile now has a wall for your clips and screenshots. Drop in your clutch moments, give them a title, and other players can like and comment on them. You just drag the clip in; it's ready in seconds.
>
>
**💬 Chat**
 — you can now message any player on the platform in real time. Typing indicators, seen receipts, emoji, image sharing, unread badges. Match with someone in LFG, then just DM them to set up the squad.
>
> Everything's free and in beta. Genuine question since you're who I build for: now that profiles have clips and there's chat — what would make ggLobby a place you'd actually hang out, not just check stats once and leave?
>
> Happy to drop the link in a comment (sub rules). Roast freely.
