Supplies for First Week?

To current students: what sort of supplies do you bring with you to the first week of classes? I'm transferring from community college, and I'm used to bringing binders and notebooks on my first week that I order online. But I'm moving to NYC in a week for the ARC Jumpstart Series, and my boyfriend got us a temporary apartment on the Upper West Side until we find a place to live. Because I'll be staying by myself for a month at the apartment, I'm worried about shipping in supplies from Amazon due to fear of package theft. So, I'm planning on getting supplies now before I fly to NYC and pack them to bring with me.

What do you guys typically bring with you on your first week? Do you bring anything, or do you wait to see the syllabi for each class? I'm just trying to get an idea of if it's worth it, what I should bring, or if I should just wait.

Sports/Club Teams Available to GS Students?

I'm matriculating at Columbia this fall as a GS student, and I'm curious if there are any sports open to those subset of students? I'm interested in track and running as I did in high school, but I wasn't sure if there were any club sports or something that GS students could be part of.

Common for Courses to Already Show Up in Courseworks for Fall 2026?

Is this a common thing? All of my courses are already showing up. While three of them are empty, one has provisional information from Fall 2026 (modules, syllabus, assignment info, etc.). Is this a common thing to occur?

Columbia GS classes?

Hello! I am an incoming Columbia GS transfer, and I'm planning on majoring in Sociology. Has any Columbia GS students transfers registered for classes yet, or is there a set date this summer where transfers begin registering?

Transfer Results as a CC Graduate

Hi guys! I just wanted to join the club and share my transfer results, as well lol. Coming into this, I wasn't prepared for a whirlwind of an application season. Some colleges I wish I would've applied to, but I'm overall thankful for the acceptances that I received. I have a nontraditional path (I'm 25).

CC GPA: 4.0/4.0

ASU GPA: 3.1/4.0 (Felt disillusioned with my major of Software Engineering)

HS GPA: 3.3 GPA

Current Major: Mass Communication (Interest in Sociology and/or Journalism)

ECs: Phi Theta Kappa Chapter President, Student Government Interim Executive Board Secretary Treasurer (24-25, replacing the last one for the months of April-May 2025), Student Government House of Representative (25-26), Presidential Leadership Society, Sigma Kappa Delta English Honor Society, TISL (Tennessee Intercollegiate State Legislature) delegate and TISL Media Reporter, English, Mass Communication, and French Tutor

Honors: All-USA Academic Team Scholar ($3,000 PTK scholarship), Coca-Cola New Century Pathway Transfer Scholar ($2,750 PTK scholarship), Oberndorf Lifeline to Completion Scholar (Just got this notification today from PTK! $1,500 PTK scholarship), All-State Academic Team Scholar (no scholarship, just state recognition), received 3rd place in regional literary anthology book for a creative nonfiction piece I wrote, published in my cc's 2026 issue of fine arts journal, placed first in my category at school research fair for my research on media psychology

Extras: Invited by College President to be Commencement Speaker for my graduation, published author of 6 books, ranging from romance to suspense, published in six issues of TISL Times newsletter during convention, studied abroad during summer 2025 in France and Austria to gain literature credit in Modern World Literature

(So upset with myself for not applying for Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship back in January lol)

Acceptances:

  • Columbia GS
  • New York University
  • Ithaca College
  • Loyola Marymount University
  • Middle Tennessee State University
  • Belmont University
  • Cumberland University
  • Lipscomb University

Rejected

  • Stanford University (This one was the most heartbreaking, as it's been my dream school for years)
  • University of Southern California
  • Vanderbilt University

Can Someone Help Me Understand Why Columbia GS Is Seen As A Bad School To Get Into?

I've seen discourse about this. I was really interested in applying to Columbia GS for Sociology because of its flexibility for nontraditional students like myself and it being in the New York market, a city where I'd like to dip my toe into journalism internships and job opportunities. I got accepted Early Action back in April. But it seems like many of you think it's just a watered-down version of Columbia College and not worth it to attend, based on some of the discourse I've seen. Is this just a case of Ivy League purism, or is it actually a watered-down education that isn't worth the sticker price (won't receive my financial aid package for another few weeks)? What are everyone's thoughts?
