Our Friends Copied Our Wedding Theme... And I Don’t Know What To Do
Some details are changed for privacy. (The first picture was their theme and the second picture is our theme).
I’m (F 23). My fiancé Matt (M 25). We’ve been together since high school and engaged for just over a year.
From the beginning, Matt and I knew what we wanted for our wedding: Maroon and Gold theme. Planned on getting married in summer.
It’s been our thing forever. Matt wanted a maroon suit and if not we planned to make it the bridesmaid color dresses. Matt and I made mood boards, saved ideas, and told our close friends about it.
One of those friends are Dean (M 29), and Megan (F 24). They’ve been together 5 years and just got engaged too.
Months ago we showed them our whole maroon and gold plan. They saw the mood boards, the colors, everything.
At the time, they were planning something totally different: Purple and Turquois. They planned on getting married in winter. They showed us their mood board. We also talked about everything.
So I didn’t think anything of it.
Then last month we were all at dinner.
Dean mentioned he was thinking of a maroon suit.
And then Megan showed us their new mood board.
It was maroon and gold. Same colors as us. Same elegant, romantic style. Nothing like the purple and turquoise they started with.
And their wedding is now planned for the same month as ours too. Different date.
Megan laughed and said, “Sorry, we’re stealing your theme.”
I didn’t say anything in the moment. I just froze.
Here’s why it’s bothering me:
We told them about our theme first, months ago.
They knew we were doing maroon and gold.
They had a different theme and changed it.
They said it as a joke, but it still happened.
I know nobody owns a color. Maroon and gold isn’t ours. Anyone can use it.
But it still feels weird because they saw our plan first, and now it looks the same.
Matt says we should keep our theme. “We planned it first. Don’t change just because of them.”
And part of me agrees. This is what we’ve wanted.
But another part of me worries. What if people go to their wedding first and then think we copied them?
I don’t want drama. I don’t want people comparing the two weddings.
Part of me wants to just change our colors to avoid all of it.
The other part feels like that’s not fair to us either.
So I really need outside opinions.
Am I overreacting?
If you were me, would you keep the theme or change it?
What would you do?
I’m not trying to start fights. I just didn’t expect this to happen and I don’t know what the right move is.
Any advice would be appreciated
AITA?
QUICK UPDATE:
Matt and I have decided to move our wedding for to a few years from now for personal reasions . We want to take our time making it really special to us, and we also want to be there to fully support our friends on their big day. We’re so excited for what’s ahead.
