Making a Warlock for the first time

My group might be starting a side arc soon and the DM is giving us the opportunity to bring in a new character. We’re playing with gritty realism rules and the campaign has a really cool devil NPC so I’m strongly leaning towards playing a Fiend Warlock. The only thing is that I’ve never properly played a warlock before so I don’t really know what the best build would be. I’m not a complete min-maxer but I still like playing decently strong characters.

For character creation, we’re Level 6, using point buy for stats, and are allowed either one rare magic item or two uncommon items.
We’re playing in a semi-modern setting so I’m leaning towards playing a human but I’m open to alternatives.

So, what feats, Eldritch invocations, pact, spells, etc would you recommend for a Fiend warlock? And warlock players, what tips and tricks do you have for playing the class? Thanks!

EDIT: I think my main question now is which magic items and feats would be the best for a Fiend warlock
